Proderma offers sunscreen specifically for golfers

Although I endeavor to avoid hypocrisy, I usually fail. For example, I look at smokers and wonder how they can continue to smoke, knowing full well the cancer risk. Then I hit the links on sunny days without even giving thought to sunscreen, knowing full well the cancer risk. Sigh. My only pitiful defense is that I hate getting all greasy and goopy. God knows I have enough trouble with my grip (and often with the re-grip I attempt at the top of my backswing – ugly, really ugly) without having to fight with slippery hands and grips. Last week I tried some of the rather ingenious products made by Proderma Products, which are designed specifically for golfers, and was pleasantly surprised. Although the Proderma line is formulated to dry quickly and without a greasy film, I could not bring myself to overcome my aversion to smearing on the stuff – yet. However, Proderma apparently knows how I (and lots of other golfers – especially men with hairy arms and legs, I think) feel. They package sunscreen in towlette packs that wipe the protection on cleanly and quickly, without goopy excess. Even better in my opinion is their face-stick. Imagine a Chapstick on steroids that you use to glide SPF 30 sunscreen across your cheeks, nose, ears, and neck. I never had to touch the stuff at all! Seeing as May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and I missed it, I promise to put this Proderma stuff in my bag, and even promise to do my best to remember to use it. And I’d ask the rest of you to take similar precautions, too. It’d be a shame if the game we love ends up killing us. Comments:

The game I love might kill me anyway- nevermind what the sun will do to me.
Good info on the Proderma.
And don't forget to consider spray-on sunscreens. Coppertone offers several types, as does Clinique (if it's not too girly for males to purchase a bottle of Clinique anything). I keep a bottle of the spray-on stuff in my car, so it's handy at all times.
No grease, no sticky!

As a fair-skinned Brit living in Austin, TX, I have not choice but to slop on the sunscreen. The only time I've been burned is on cloudy days when I didn't think about it enough.
The slipperyness of sunscreen doesn't really bother me. In fact, my only double bogey in my last round came before I started applying the cream. After the sunscreen went on, I went on to shoot my best ever round. Go figure.

I've used the Proderma products before. They do work, but are quite expensive. Even worse, they are missing the key ingredient to look for in a sunscreen, zinc. I've had my fair share of skin cancer burned and frozen off and every dermatolgist has told me to make sure that the sunscreen I use has zinc as an ingredient. I switched to an SP58 w/zinc this year, and I've had no troubles with sunburns.
As for the "goopiness", what I do is use my glove hand to apply it, wipe the excess on my arms and then use my towel for the last little bit. It works like a charm.

Funny--the Proderma SPF 45 I have contains zinc oxide. I assume this is what Jud's referring to...

Active ingredients information is key as noted by Jud Spencer. I recently read newspaper articles based on studies that recommend you avoid oxybenzone (benzophenone). It reacts poorly with the sun and heat.

Ziel, That must be new. I picked up three bottles of the stuff a little over a year ago, and it didn't include zinc-oxide.
Good to hear that they are including it now. Leave a comment: |
