Alternative to logo balls: Personalized grips

Thursday September 27, 2007 | 20:26:23 247 words, 5161 views
Win a free golf book!

So I’m at a golf outing last month, and I end up winning the long-drive competition. (OK, so I was the only one who kept the ball on the fairway; could have used my putter and still won.) For my awesome display of sheer luck, I won a dozen golf balls with the company logo on them.

One month later, three-quarters of those balls are no more – I lost a few, my kids stole a few, and most of them have been shredded by my wedges and those pesky cart paths.

It occurred to me today that if that company really wanted to advertise, or really wanted to impress me with their largess, they could have given me something that would last – something like SMT Golf’s personalized grips.

SMT has begun a Get a Grip program, which can stock individuals, companies, clubmakers—heck, anyone—with any number of personalized grips (even just one, if you want). For as little as $1.75/grip, you can get a grip with anything you want laser-engraved on it in just about any color. That’s cheaper than you can usually get stock grips without anything written on them.

Granted, I don’t want a set of grips with “Dr. McSquinty’s Optometry” written on them, but if I were organizing an outing, it would be pretty cool to offer a set of grips engraved with the name of the overall winner written on them.

They would sure last a lot longer than logo golf balls.
