Paul Goydos almost wins one for the rest of us

Win a free golf book!

Paul Goydos is 42 years old, and a portly 5″9″, 190 lbs. He hits sort of a cut shot (i.e, a controlled slice), not terribly far, but extremely reliable.

He putts with one of those huge, ugly mallet putters – a TaylorMade Rossa Monza – that looks like a model of a space ship, or a branding iron, or a medical device.

And he doesn’t even have a sponsor. He wears a hat with the logo of the Long Beach State 49ers, and a mock turtleneck in the final rounds of The Players Championship.

When Goydos was asked why he buttoned his shirt all the way up the on Saturday, he deadpanned, “I don’t have any shoulders. If I didn’t button it, my shirt would fall off.”

Goydos is every man.

Sergio is the Euro-chic twenty-something who parties with supermodels, jets around the globe, has a putting coach and a swing coach and a sports psychologist and a trainer and a handler and an agent. He has been known to spit in the cup out of anger.

“Sunshine” Goydos is ironically nicknamed, but he is well-liked. He’s Everyman.

And today, he came a yard from winning for all of us who are not on the permanent guest list at Joy Esclava nightclub in Madrid. Even those of us who have been on that guest list were pulling for Goydos.

Well done, Paul.

And all you equipment companies, pony up some dough and sponsor Goydos. Play to your customer base. The folks stumbling home from European discos at sunrise are not heading to the links.

All I could think of was, Mike Donald. Poor Mike Donald. It enervates me when the Hale Irwins and the Sergios snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, helped by the dives into defeat of the every man. Well, Sergio deserved this one, after Birkdale. I guess if Goydos hadn't chunked the pitch on 18, he'd have been the new Craig Perks.

That's my little brother - everyman but with style and grace under pressure - we are all so proud.

Somebody please tell Ron Monster it was Liverpool where Sergio got blitzed by Tiger and Carnoustie where he lost the chokfest to Harrington. Birkdale is the site of this year's Open.

Are you listening? I doubt it. Tradition, yes, Elitism must be eliminated from Golf. Mr. Goydos had all of us in his corner.

Jim--Style and grace in cartloads! My favorite part was wind that wicked wind knocked his ball down into the drink in the playoff, and he simply looked up into the sky and frowned. No profanity-laced tirade, no flinging of clubs. A class act all the way.

anti-Sergio bias a little hard to take- and actually inaccurate and pays no account of the great golf he played on a course which kicked everyone in the teeth

Not so much anti-Sergio bias (except for the spitting incident), as discontent with sponsors regarding who they think we like to watch. I *do* love watching Sergio--he's amazing with that lag in his swing and remarkable distance for such a little guy. However, he's not the kind of golfer that many of your average TV-golf-watching fans can relate to, interms of his game or his lifestyle. Not sure what's innacurate in my observations of Sergio's on-course behavior or in the persona contrived for him (or by him) in the media.

Goydos' graciousness, humility and charisma charmed this mother of three while I was watching the tournament and running on the treadmill. Surely there is a sponsor out there who can see his appeal, too.

Sunshine is a great nickname. Reminds me of my buddy that we call Lucky Lew - an extremly ironic nickname.

My whole family was rooting for this guy because of the class and sportsmanship he displayed. I know the next tourney I go to who I'll be following.

What idiot thought up the idea of using no.17 as the first sudden death playoff hole?
