2013 Year in Review: A personal edition
2013 was the best of golf times for me, and it was the worst of times.
I started out 2013 with an epic trip to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, where I snagged a closest-to-the-pin prize at a media outing and shot a personal 9-hole best from the tips on the Streamsong Red Course during the grand opening event.
But then, when the spring clouds and rain cleared at Lake of the Woods Golf Course, my home course, I found myself suddenly unable to break 100. Perhaps predictably, heavy drinking and profound self-loathing failed to fix the problem, so I tried to schedule some lessons. But I failed to succeed in even getting that done, and left in despair for an annual golf trip to Tennessee.
It was on that trip that I carded my first hole-in-one – and there was much rejoicing! My game appeared rejuvenated.
Upon returning home, a single good round was followed by numerous bad rounds. Balls were lost. Words were said. Clubs were thrown. Lots and lots of all three. Usually in that order.
Eventually, I steeled my will and headed to the practice range, committed to not leaving until I had fixed my swing myself. Two jumbo buckets and two torn blisters later, the change had been made – I could feel it. All that was left was to groove it and trust it.
After a half-dozen subsequent rounds, there appeared, as if by divine providence, a 79 on my scorecard. This was followed by several nine-hole scores in the 30s.
Just as this minor miracle was unfolding, the season here in Illinois came to an abrupt end. Yet my intrepid compatriots and I persevered, signing up for the indoor golf-simulator league at Lake of the Woods G.C., which has kept our hearts young, our swings supple, and our livers curmudgeonly.
Thus my hope for the 2014 season springs eternal…
I usually don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but I did in 2013. Amazingly, most of them were achieved in some form or another. Maybe there’s something to resolutions after all? If so, Anna Kendrick, you are in for a special sort of 2014…
