Train like Jordan Spieth with Crossover Symmetry's Golf Fitness Package
Elite professional golfers hit the ball much, much farther than they did 50 or even 10 years ago. Part of this amped up power game is attributable to modern golf equipment, both clubs and balls.
But another significant factor is the physical conditioning of professional players today. Players on all professional Tours these days spend nearly as much time in the gym as they do on the course. They have trainers. They have nutritionists. They have yoga instructors.
But the average golfer? Well, we might have gym memberships and good intentions, but many of us – based on my own experience, anyway – struggle to find time and motivation to get to that gym, much less work out daily and THEN hit the course or the practice range.
Working out at home is one option, but a dedicated workout room is a luxury for many. Personally, I have lifted a lot of weights in my life, but bulking up is not the best thing for the golf swing. So I was excited, and motivated, when I found Crossover Symmetry, a resistance band training program that I could set up on any door in my house.
The Crossover Symmetry Training Zone details how the system can be used for any sport, from golf to swimming to volleyball to baseball. There are online videos and detailed exercise diagrams included with the bands.
I set up the deluxe version of the AMPD Golf Fitness Package ($385) with all four available sets of resistance bands, from 10 to 45 lbs., on my basement door, using the door straps. After hanging the exercise placard on the straps at eye level, I just worked my way through it…while watching TV, even.
AMPD co-founder, Dave Goddard, is Jordan Spieth’s strength coach. He’s developed multiple series of functional movement exercises, isolating the shoulders, core, and hips. The resistance bands boost both strength and flexibility, all in the same session. I’ve definitely improved my posture – or at the very least become more aware of it as I address the ball.
Best of all, at my age, I find the low-impact of the bands to be easy on my joints. I’d had a sore shoulder for months, but by working up through the resistance weights, I seem to have worked out whatever the problem was and haven’t felt any pain for over a month.
I won’t be hitting the ball as far as Tour pros, or even as far as I did 20 years ago, but with some discipline and the Crossover Symmetry bands and program, I won’t be losing as much yardage as I would if I spent all my time off the course on my couch.
Crossover Symmetry sets up in minutes on any door. (My wife wasn’t quite as excited by its presence in our living room, however…)
