Wednesday June 29, 2005 | 06:29:46 80 words, 1093 views
Congrats go to Suzy Whaley, for making the cut in the PGA Club Professional Championship this past weekend at Kiawah Island. The only woman in the field, Suzy became the first female to make the cut in a CPC. She finished tied for 64th. She was competing from 6,229 yards compared to the guys’ 7,355 yards.
University of Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small won, by the way, taking home $67k. Look for him come Aug. 11-14 in the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. full post »
With Rory Sabbatini blog, McDonald breaks more than a story
Wednesday June 15, 2005 | 07:05:39 147 words, 1103 views
Tim McDonald recently wrote a hotly contested piece in his blog titled “No need for Rory Sabbatini to apologize at U.S. Open.” That post prompted an outpouring of comments, some supporting Tim, most calling his opinion a load of B.S.
I’m all for this type of open forum and blogs give readers a great chance to jump into the fray and take on the writer. HOWEVER, dear readers, you do not have license to post things that are outright lies!
Take for example Derrek Jones, who posted this comment over at Tim’s blog: Have it on good faith from a reliable source ... full post »
Remembering Payne Stewart and his U.S. Open win at Pinehurst in '99

“After Six Years, the Memories and Anguish Remain Sharp,” Damon Hack’s story in today’s New York Times is one of the best feature stories about a golfer that I’ve read in a long time. full post »
Tiger & U.S. Open at Pinehurst ..... let the fun begin!
Monday June 13, 2005 | 03:32:06 63 words, 1223 views
Now that it’s over, we can call the Booz Allen Classic what is really was. Sergio’s arrival on the big stage? Naaaah. More like “that tournament going on before the U.S. Open.”
Let the Tiger talk begin, folks. Grand Slam. The new swing. The missed cut. The suitability of Pinehurst No. 2 to his game. The Nike gear. The bride.
Prediction? Not here. full post »
Sergio Garcia tears up the Booz Allen Classic
Sunday June 12, 2005 | 19:13:48 110 words, 1039 views
Back on May 10, in the wake of Sergio Garcia’s meltdown in the Wachovia Championship, Chris Baldwin wrote: “It’s easy to root for Sergio. Harder and harder to believe in him. … It’s about time to drop that Sergio’s-still-young rationale/excuse as well. The once fresh-faced kid’s 25 now and he’s been playing golf since he was three. At a certain point, the mental makeup of your game and the path of your career is set in motion. And Garcia’s on a headfirst track to being an all-time disappointment.”
In light of Sergio’s showing at the Booz Allen Classic, perhaps we can ... full post »
Don't let friends drive drunk - even golf carts
Thursday June 9, 2005 | 12:48:15 24 words, 1354 views
Where I grew up, late night, drunken spins on a golf cart were a rite of passage. Thank God it never came to this.

Can't wait to thump some golf balls with my Alpha V2 425cc Driver
Thursday June 9, 2005 | 08:24:49 121 words, 965 views
Someone call an ambulance! The range is fixin’ to become a very dangerous place.
I just got my hands on an Alpha V2 425cc Driver to review. Sweet looking club. Haven’t had the pleasure to batter any balls with it yet, but I did just read where Alpha drivers tore up the Alpha Long Drive Classic in Des Moines. According to the company, six out of eight of the top finalists in the open division, and three out of four of the top finalists in the senior division chose Alpha as their driver of choice.
Something tells me putting one of these ... full post »
Suzy Whaley set to rock Kiawah Island during PGA CPC
Thursday June 9, 2005 | 08:12:28 164 words, 1079 views
There’s a fair bit of LPGA chatter here of late, even talk of the LPGA’s “These Girls Rock” PR campaign. Get ready, however, for one chick who really rocks. I’m a huge fan of Suzy Whaley, the PGA Pro from Connecticut who, in 2002 became the first female PGA member to play in the PGA Club Professional Championship. A year later, you may remember, she became the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for a berth in a PGA Tour event.
She’s at it again.
The 38-year-old is going to play in the CPC again this year, this time ... full post »
Playoff plan could be good news (at last) for LPGA Tour
Wednesday June 8, 2005 | 11:27:20 116 words, 4656 views
You might have read Chris Baldwin’s dire take on the current state of the LPGA.
One of my golf blog favs, Bogey Lounge, is writing about some good LPGA news. He writes about the LPGA’s plan for a $1,000,000 playoff beginning next season. It’ll be the first time a golf tour has had a year-end playoff system comparable to other sports. “Things are looking up for the LPGA as they trump the PGA in making a progressive decision, while the men’s side continues to contemplate schedule changes (and less events),” Bogey Lounge writes.
Here’s my two cents: Give Sophie Sandolo an automatic ... full post »
Taking aim on "Mommy's Boy" Phil Mickelson
Wednesday June 8, 2005 | 11:12:38 65 words, 3513 views
Take a look at the vicious rip on Lefty that Billy Delmont just posted over at Doug Carey’s blog! Ouch.
Delmont writes that Mickleson is a “quintessential Mommy’s Boy. 2)Creepes me out as much as Nicklaus. Imagine a tour made up soley of this kind of drip. Drip, drip, drip. Boring………..zzzzzzzzzzz”
While, I’m no huge fan of Mickelson ….. what’s with the Bear blast, Billy!? full post »

Golf bloggers Chris Baldwin, Rebel are wimping out
Wednesday June 8, 2005 | 05:59:39 230 words, 3601 views
Just doing a little score keeping, I realized that TravelGolf.com bloggers Chris Baldwin and the ceegar-chomping Rebel Blogger have both conveniently ignored direct challenges of late and no one’s calling them on it. No more!
Back in late April, Baldwin ripped off a cheap slam against golf instructors.
Not wanting to let him get away with kicking a hornets’ nest just for grins, I ordered him to take a lesson and write about it. Hell, one PGA Professional in NY even offered to give him the lesson free.
What’s come of all this? So far ….. nothing. I did see where Baldwin’s been ... full post »
David Toms has finger on pulse of the gallery
Tuesday June 7, 2005 | 06:54:13 123 words, 1766 views
I’m bummed to admit I didn’t actually see live coverage of David Toms flipping off a member of the gallery Sunday at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio. I’m not losing any sleep over his salute, but I do think it was pretty lame of him to then basically deny it. “What kind of question is that?” Toms responded to a reporter who asked about the incident. “Do I look like someone who’d flip someone off in the crowd? I mean, I can’t believe I’m even talking to you.” Dave, it’s on camera!
For what it’s worth, though, in the ... full post »
Colin Montgomerie lucky the U.S. Open is in Pinehurst
Friday June 3, 2005 | 12:06:11 121 words, 1191 views
My guy over at HookedOnGolf just reminded me about Monty. Now that Mrs. Doubtfire has qualified for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, you have to start wondering if the Nucklehead Squad will be gearing up to heckle him. Given that he’ll be coming into the Open dragging with him the Indonesian Open controversy, I gotta think most sane golf fans are thanking their lucky stars the tourney’s in Pinehurst this year, rather than up north at Shinnecock Hills, Bethpage or Baltusrol, where it would’ve gotten ugly in no time. Here’s hoping the fans down in North Carolina show some class ... full post »
Caribbean crime: Here's another nod to the good folks down there
Thursday June 2, 2005 | 05:57:20 139 words, 1085 views
Reading the blogs by Brandon and Tim, I remembered a long-ago trip down island. My dad and I did the hop from Florida through the Bahamas on our way to Cub…….. err, uhh, to some other island down there, one where you can see a lot of cars from the ’50s.
At any rate, my pop left his camera in the backseat of a Bahamian cab. Bummed, we backtracked to the airport in what I reckoned was a ridiculously futile mission. Lo and behold, we asked the guy at the taxi stand. He lit up, smiled, said, “Wait right here, mon!” ... full post »
