Suckers, here's your chance to caddy in British Open at St. Andrews

Betcha a million quid I can spot the guy at the British Open with way too much money and way too little sense. He’ll be the guy carrying the bag for David Diaz. Take a look at Ebay auction 7167732862. When I posted this, the bidding was up to $7,418. All for the chance to tote a bag for some Aussie hack - and still have to pay to get yourself to St. Andrews and find a place to stay (and based on the caddies staying in my hotel when I covered the 1995 Czech Open in Marianske Lazne, you’ll still need another $3,000 or so to cover your liquor intake).

Although it WOULD be cool to caddie in such a great event, the time, effort and money involved with getting over there would be too much of an opportunity cost for most people (so yeah, basically the winning bidder is mentally handicapped). Why not fly out to Vegas and gamble? I think you've got the same odds either way--an "Aussie hack" making the cut in the Open Championship or the no-limit tables in Vegas. Personally, I feel like this golfer is simply trying to cut his losses. "Hedging" if you will. With the bid up as high as it is already, he's pretty much covered his trip and a good portion of his liquor expenses. But I mean hey, if you can't get a sponsor to give you a lot of money, I guess putting a bid up on eBay is the way to go.

Obviously the dude has money to burn, but tt would be very cool to get inside the ropes on golf's grandest stage. Only in the US are we basically unaware that the rest of the world looks at The Open as the greatest championship in golf. How many memories do you think this guy will have by the end of this week? If I had that kind of bread, I'd do it too.

Agree with the sentiment of being inside the ropes at the home of golf. I too would pay a lot to do that (if I had it). Nearest I'll get is as a marshal at the senior british open next week.
As for the Ryder cup, with Woosnam as Captain the Europeans don't stand a chance I'm sorry to say.
