Ben Crane creeps to US Bank Championship win; vows to play faster - some day
Monday July 25, 2005 | 05:21:13 218 words, 1070 views
The same Ben Crane who caused all the ruckus in June at the Booz Allen Classic when his slow pace ticked off playing partner Rory Sabbatini turned that glacial pace to his advantage Sunday, winning the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee. After the win, Crane addressed his notorious, snail-like pace, telling reporters, “I think it’s a process and I think over the next few months I’ll get better.” A few MONTHS!? Just to not play so slow that everyone on tour groans when they’re paired with you and wants to skull you with a wedge by the end of the round!? Give me a break. Runner-up Scott Verplank told the AP: “It’s a good thing he’s a great guy because if he wasn’t he would probably have a lot of trouble with all the players.” Given that golfers are genetically programmed to never say anything critical about anything, this is a hell of a statement. Translation: “Did you ever see ‘Full Metal Jacket?’ If Crane gets any slower, me and the boys are going to tie him down, put bars of soap in pillow cases, and beat the snot out of him!!!” Something tells me that sort of thing would cause less outrage among golf fans than Sabbatini’s putting out of turn at the the Booz Allen. – Mark Comments:

The PGA needs to starting handing out stroke penalties for slow play, not cash penalties once a year.
Isn't there a rule in golf about slow play, why does the PGA not enforce them.

How many of us have ever stood over a shot that was potentially worth a couple of thousand dollars? I might take the time I have allotted as well. By the way, Ben finished 15 minutes ahead of schedule the final round of the US Bank Championship. If you are going to heckle him for slow play at least acknowledge his efforts and accomplishments.

Litterally hundreds of pro golfers
over the years have stood over putts worth thousands of dollars and none of them that i can remember took as long as Crane does .

When I said "us" I was referring to non professional golfers. ie: People that can not idetify with the pressure. Of course other pro golfers do not take the time that Crane does, but come on. Is this really such a big deal to pull "Full Metal Jacket" references as was mentioned in this blog? Does anyone remember Sergio a few years back? Look what him taking his time in his earlier years did for his career? It is also not just the pressure of the thousands of dollars. If these guys do not win they may not be on tour next year. Ben Crane is doing exactly what is necessary to maintain his career and success. Besides all of that the man is willing to deal with this issue and has admitted working on it. It is not as if he is being defiant. My point is everyone should move on and get over it. If enough of the other golfers put pressure on the PGA they will deal with it. Bloggers and cynics should find real jerks to bash on (or beat with soap) and not great sportsmen like Ben Crane.
