After withdrawing from the Senior PGA Championship because he felt he wouldn’t be competitive (and despite a spokeman’s mid May assurances that the King has “kind of put all his golf on hold"), Arnold Palmer now says he’s going to play in the U.S. Men’s Senior Open in July in Hutchinson, Kan. Via a press release about his “comeback,” Palmer addressed the state of his golf game. “My golf has certainly not been up to par of late. Hopefully, by the time I get to Kansas, my game will be much better.” I don’t know what exactly a 76-year-old man does ... full post »

Thank America's golfing vets on Memorial Day

Today at the golf course, odds are the veteran you’re playing golf with had to pay the normal green fees just like you (which is a shame). So I want you people to do what too many golf courses are slow to do: Something nice for our the men and women who have served, or are serving their country in uniform. You don’t need to salute ‘em and sing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” Just do a little something to say thanks. Pick up the tab on that beer in the club room. Pay for their bucket of range balls. If you’re ... full post »

Arnold Palmer takes WorldGolf.com blogger's advice, won't play Senior PGA Championship

Thursday May 18, 2006 | 06:40:24 121 words, 1096 views
Arnold Palmer has taken retired WorldGolf.com blogger “Bangkok Al” Katz’s advice to heart and bagged out of this year’s Senior PGA Championship. What’s more, according to this story, he’s “kind of put all his golf on hold.” In his “All the world’s a stage, and it’s time for Arnold Palmer to exit” blog entry, Al wrote, “We don’t need to recount what Palmer has meant to the game of golf. But watching him swing a golf club carries the whiff of tragedy now.” And in his follow-up entry, “Stop televising Arnold Palmer, part 2″, Al wrote: “Let’s celebrate what [Arnold Palmer] was ... full post »

Drugs report: NCAA golfers burn more weed than Willie Nelson!

Here is a link to a pretty fascinating article titled “PGA Golf Tour Snubs U.S. Tests as Marijuana Surfaces in Europe.” The report states “marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy have turned up in French and Italian tests of amateur and pro golfers.” The stats that follow seem dire. But a closer read reveals that 12 of 100 French golfers tested over a four-year period had positive results for banned substances (including marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy). A whopping SIX of the 350 Italians tested over a five-year period tested positive for banned drugs (and three of those were for marijuana). But get this: “There are ... full post »

I’m not as in the know about the latest golf equipment as gear guru Kiel Christianson. But I CAN tell you that this is no way to test a golf ball. Dude, that’s crazy! John Daly can take hope from this, however. If his gaming jones cleans him out and his playing career hits the skids, perhaps Long John can find work testing golf balls like these guys. full post »
