Time to nix the nationalist President's Cup, Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup Matches?
The Canadian organizers of the President’s Cup are creating a spectacle and playing “into the hands of that most disturbing of human characteristics; Nationalism!” The Principal’s Nose writes in his golf blog.
“These team games are meant to foster good relations but instead are often hi-jacked by those competing or watching as an opportunity to teach someone a lesson. Has it become so ugly that representing your country or continent or part of the world is more important than what the founders of our great game envisaged?”

And here I always thought you had to smart to be a Principal. Because a few louts have never been taught good sportsmanship, he wants to abolish the best events in golf. What a maroon.

Noooooooooo! I know there have been a couple or more rather over the top events, but I think we have all learnt our lessons and the sportsmanship has returned. I love these team events. Even though I support the European teams I never feel anti-American as such. In fact some of my favourite players ARE American. I have to be honest that I never support Tiger and Phil in the men's events(they don't need it, I know)but I think they all play their hearts out. I, for one, would never have the courage to stand on that first tee (think this year's Walker Cup) - fortunately I don't have the ability, either.

The Principal is a golf purist who, I suspect, would prefer to see golf remain an austere game of tortured souls played out on some obscure, windswept linksland. He's a good writer though, got to give him that.
Anyway,
For most recreational golfers and golf fans, the international events just add one more interesting dimension to the game we love. BTW, I'm a proud American who'd be a hell of a lot more likely to be pulling for Vijay Singh than for Phil Mickelson. But that's just me.
