US Open's Pinehurst No. 2 is an over-rated golf course

Marketing and PR flacks are truly a unique and special breed. They can take the ordinary and have you convinced it is extraordinary. Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, is a very average golf course with few memorable holes. It is indeed a splendid golf course worthy of many accolades, but not worth of its $300-plus price tag. Pinehurst No. 2, my friends, is more bun than burger. Chris Wallace of GolfCarolina.com hits the nail on the head when he wrote, “Pinehust Pinehurst Resort Management has accomplished a marketing ploy that is amazing: These days even criticizing Pinehurst Number 2 is blasphemous on its own. People get nostalgic about courses like this based on Payne Stewart and the U.S. Open. They get nostalgic about this course just like baseball fans get teary-eyed about Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. Any baseball fan can tell you there are far better parks than those two. It is the history and traditions of those parks that are special - not their actual architectures. The Pinehurst and Sandhills area offers fantastic golf that is a great value. Pinehurst Number 2 is not a good value for the dollar. Pinehurst No. 2 is a great “belt notcher” course, but nothing more. Want to write a letter to the editor and have it published? Click here. Obviously this blogger doesn't know a thing about golf architecture, golf design, or golf history. He must judge courses by "how pretty they are" or how many waterfalls are on the course.
Pinehurst #2 is one of America's best golf courses for design, shotmaking, and yes, beauty. Yes, the PR machine has moved into high-gear recently on Pinehurst #2, and yes, with that has come a higher green fee, but to call #2 an "average" course just shows ignorance. Any real golf knowledgable person knows the worthiness of Pinehusrt #2; despite the added PR hype. Shooting from the hip, usually means you miss the target.
So for all if its history and blah blah...still worth $315 to $375? Really think so?

This is the first, and probably the last time, I plan on reading such a ridiculous blog. Very average? Please. This course doesn't have tillinghast traps, or island greens, or torrey pines length. its the subtlety of the domed greens and the creativity necessary to make a variety of shots--what an insult to a course with such low key brillance.
