Caddie demands, gets top $$$ to endorse . . .

Tuesday July 5, 2005 | 17:29:49 357 words, 3393 views
Win a free golf book!

I have seen the future, and it is not Pogo. In a recent press release, caddie Ronan Flood was revealed to have worn a certain brand of shades that help to read putts better, to help his man Paddy Harrington win the Barclay’s (loved the commercials where they sang opera!) I love the concept of the shades, but I love even more the thought that professional caddies are now the targets of marketing and P.R. machines. I think that Flood got the idea from Jam Boy, as he has written in blogs about the same pair of specs.

I now have a list of potential products for endorsement by caddies, with special notice given to the two most recognizable loopers, Fluff and Scruff (Steve Williams).

–Baby powder, for the occasional chaffing that occurs while carrying an oversized bag of sticks and balls;
–Back belts, for the expected pain that comes from carrying an oversized bag of sticks, balls, food, rain gear, and personal items;
–Sun screen, to demonstrate that constant but protected exposure to the sun need not result in illness;
–Beach rakes, an idea whose time has come. Why deal with the vagaries of the sands or the sandbox, left behind by previous tenants who cared little for those who followed;
–Baby Wipes, to promote the cleanliness that extends far beyond the cleansing of golf balls and golf clubs;
–Tooth Picks, since your grooves deserve the same care as your choppers;
–For Fluff, moustache wax to keep him “fluffed,” ankle braces for the weak joint, and an MP3 player contract for the Grateful Dead songs he absolutely loves;
–For Scruff (Steve Williams, in case you forgot), Cannon Rebel Digital (it stands up to me! could be the tag line), any type of medical product for the body parts he damages, and throat spray, for those moments when just one yell won’t do.

Now understand, I don’t for a moment think that these ruminations are all that funny (and many of you will doubtless agree.) In fact, if you come up with additional products for promotion by caddies, post a comment and our list will grow.
