PGA Championship Round One: The Bangs and the Busts

Use the force, Luke! Lucas Glover, by his own admission, got caught up in the Ryder Cup hype and went AWOL for a few months, made the biggest impression on Thursday. Minus Six! Riley wasn’t bad either, matching him, but it will take more than just one event (unless he wins!) to make the team. If he hadn’t taken a powder in that afternoon match, Riley would be on the short list of Captain’s picks. As it is right now, unless there is a secret bond between him and Lehman, Riley is out unless he wins. He did miss a playoff two years ago by a stroke, on his way to making the team, so don’t count him out.

Billy Andrade got in at the eleventh hour, and showed that he belongs. He is a journeyman pro (who went to school with none other than RonMon!) who seems to make some noise in the PGA every three years or so. The other Billy, mister cancer recovery, was at the magic minus six figure until he bogeyed three in a row. Tough luck, that one, but not as bloody as DL3’s wound on #17. Triple Bogey from the leader? Come on! More reason to not make him a Captain’s pick. Can you imagine him at the K Club…locked in a tight battle with one of the European greats…dropping a triple bogey on the penultimate hole? No way!

Stewie Cinky is at it again…plays a good PGA, makes the team, then lets us down in head-to-head play. He’ll do it again in 2006, mark my words. I don’t care how tall or bald he is! In case you missed it, two Euros are at -4 (Stenson and Donald) and Westwood and Garcia are one in arrears. That’s one-third of their team, for goodness sake.

Who would have expected Medinah to cave so easily? Will the PGA respond in USGA fashion with faster greens? Tougher pins? Longer tees? Probably not, as they pride themselves in being less stiff than the boys in blue.

Finally, comeback of the day goes to Jerry Kelly. I had him buried after four holes and three bogeys. He then posts six birdies and another bogey on the remaining 14 to finish -2. He would have found himself about three down after nine in an RC match, but the 32 on the back might have won the day. Three more good rounds, and I say, “pick him!”
