Fourth Course at Bandon More Than Just MacDonald

The news is finally out. The fourth course at Bandon is to be called Old MacDonald, and is to evoke the spirit of Charles Blair MacDonald (or Chuckie B., as his friends from the hood called him when they rolled) and Seth Raynor. Classic golf holes such as Redan, Biarritz, Alps, Sahara, and Cape, will be recreated on the turf north and east of Pacific Dunes. The land, the soil, the terrain, are all perfect for the recreation, and anyone who has not had an opportunity to play a MacDonald or a Raynor will now have that option. Let’s face it, the National Golf Links, Fox Chapel, and Chicago Golf Club are not easy crashes.

Here’s a little prediction of my own. The fourth course will be more than just MacDonald. The fourth course will bring to life a golf course lost to anxious New York developers, a course that many claimed was MacDonald and Raynor’s finest collaboration. It shall come to pass that The Lido will again be played on American soil. Thanks be to Mike Keiser and associates at Bandon Dunes. Time to start saving my toll and BK change.

Had the good fortune to play North Berwick in Scotland 2 years ago, home of the original redan hole (the 15th). Damn near impossible, par is a terrific score there. It is followed by the 16th which has a biarritz green - alsoo a potential disaster. The trouble on both of those holes is exacerbated by the firmness of the links turf. If you are ever around Edinburgh, head east for a few rounds as North Berwick is one of several must-plays in the East Lothian area. Hope our boy Brandon gets to it on his current trip.
