The Golf Channel, The PGA Tour, and Deep Throat
Saturday January 6, 2007 | 16:41:36 226 words, 4090 views
Kiel’s mad that Tim Finchem’s heart shrank two more sizes. Dave’s pissed that the Golf Channel perhaps treads into false advertising. Tim, predictably, is ga-ga over Kelly T., and wishes she’d “tie his tie.” The common cry from the common man concerns the inaccesibility of The Golf Channel. Digital Cable premium here, satellite there. It doesn’t come cheap. I was among the disgruntled masses, the upset amalgam, until I took a step back, gazed into my children’s eyes, and saw truth. I also received a phone from a purported “Garganta Profunda,” who sounded suspiciously like Cheap Bastard, claiming to have the true story on why The Golf Channel? Why now? Here’s the nut: people don’t “casually” end up on The Golf Channel. They did, however, casually end up on ESPN, TNT or USA or other non-network channels that previously hosted golf telecasts. So, what’s the bolt? The bolt is a PGA Tour purchase of TGC. Do not be surprised if the Tour makes a bid for TGC toward August of 2007. It took the NFL untold startup dollars and a PR campaign against cable companies that would not offer NFL Network, to get a television network on air. The PGA Tour needs no such campaign, and no such start-up dollars. Expect Joe Gibbs, Arnold Palmer, and other TGC owner-types to make a deal with the PGA Tour. Comments:

Now that is interesting speculation, my soon to be snowbound friend. Once the PGA Tour has TGC it can dump all the networks and do its own golf telecasts. Yes, telecasts over a cable network that we'll have to pay more and more for. The PGA Tour will be lucky to get 50,000 viewers per day. Looks like I'll just have to play more golf or read. Damn!
If PGA Tour did buy TGC, I hope they dump those senior tour events...
