Calling All Editors: Golf Magazine, Adam Scott and Luke Donald Need Help!

Win a free golf book!

As I am wont to do, I was browsing through my February 2007 Golf Magazine in January (I receive my mail earlier than you!) and paused at the section marked “What Tour pros think about…” I’ve found this to be an interesting little read in the past, and looked forward to finding out what Donald, Scott, Dean Wilson and DL3 think about beers at the turn, wet sand, whacking balls, and a quick fix. Imagine my surprise when I read, and reread, the following:

Q: You’re in a greenside bunker that’s damp from rain. How does your approach change?

Luke Donald…It spins a little bit less when it’s wet, so I’ve just got to make sure I fly it a little bit shorter than I normally do and let it roll out. The technique is the same.

Q: You’re in a greenside bunker that’s damp from rain. How does your approach change?

Adam Scott…It’s going to play a bit firmer and spin a bit more so I want to fly it closer to the hole.

So, are you guys telling me that, no matter what strategy I select, it’s both wrong and right, at the same and different times, on similar and dissimilar days? COOL! Reminds me of the unanswerable question “If a person tries to fail and succeeds, which has he/she done?”

I leave this one to the editors. Let’s be honest: this is not an opinion piece; it’s a matter of fact. The ball either spins more or it does not. In addition, other factors, such as grooves, green speeds, point of entry into sand, and XP versus Vista come into play. The eds missed bigtime on this one.

RonMon, Perhaps it doesn't spin at all out of wet sand. If one of my students asked me that question I would begin by asking how often they get the ball up and down from the bunker in the first place.

BTW, I know the answer to this dilemma. SO, if everyone who wants to know will send me $5 in a SASE I will e-mail you the solution.
