RonMon,

What did Bubbles do to "earn" an exemption to last year's Nabisco?

I believe MW was T14 in 2005. Now go ahead and ask what she did to recive exemption in 2004.

Oh well, I'll save you the question, I do belive she was in 4th place in 2004.

Which begs the question: "Who really cares?"

Yeah, Putt4Par, do my job. The Nabisco has a history of inviting up-and-coming stars, which Wie was at one point. The invitation is usually for one year, but Wie kept performing so well that return invites were extended. This news is not so big a deal.

4putt,

Who really cares?

Well, since you have all of Bubbles' trivia at the ready, and you can't wait to divulge it, the answer is obvious.

Who cares? You do.

Alex,

You both do, but for different reasons. And I care, perhaps for both reasons. Enough about personal crusades. Wie HAS, after all, earned certain tributes. This invitation is one of them.

RonMon,

Your definition of the word "earn" is obviously different than mine.

My goodness Alex...One answers your question and gets a churlish comment like that?
Actually Alex, I just did one little Google search.

With Google as your friend, you too can have all that stuff at your finger tips.

Oh,btw, for your edification, I had to search under Michelle Wie. Searching for Bubbles came up with a lot of answers, none of them pertaining to the subject of the above article.

Ron Mon, think nothing of it, glad to help out occasionaly.

What is your definition of earn, my frustrated, pedantic reader? Remember when Wie won a US Women's Am Public Links? That type of victory usually counted for something on the women's side, as well as an invitation to the Masters on the men's side. Remember, chum, we're not trying to defend the invites to the PGA Tour (which are, truly, indefensible by performance standards.) This invite is one of the few Wie plaudits that can actually be considered performance-based.

RonMon,

As a matter of fact, I don't remember the particulars of when and how Bubbles won her Publinx event, and I seriously doubt that you do, either.

Like you, I read about it a long time after the fact.

Tell me, pal, without doing any investigation, who was the Women's Public Links winner for the 2006 tournament?

Did that winner get invited to the Nabisco?

Can't answer those questions, my elitist chum? I didn't think you would be able to.

RonMonster, you are 1000% correct. This young lady had THREE top 5 finishes in the four Major tournaments for women, any one of which would have earned Wie an invitation to all of this year's Majors (and any other women's event for that matter). To question her qualifications is idiotic. Shipnuck is usually funny but sometimes he's way off the mark and sounds pretty juvenile. You would expect a senior writer for such a top-notch magazine to be a little more knowledgeable.
02/05/07 @ 09:40
Comment from: Alex [Visitor]
Gentlemen,

What Al Shipnuck said was certainly innocuous enough.

He merely said that it would be gratifying if Bubbles would play her way into a meaningful event.

What he finds somewhat troubling is that all her exemptions seem to be predicated on her lone Publinx win.

Incidentally, Bubbles was defeated in that same tournament the year following.

As far as I can tell, her conqueror did not receive and invitation to the 2005 Nabisco. But Bubbles did receive one.

Can someone please tell me how Wie became such a divisive force?

Baby Blue Eyes,

Bubbles is just another extension of militant feminism.

You've read the fawning praise of Lard by her devoted fans.

The fact is that right now her game is in the latrine.

She couldn't hit the side of a barn with a handful of rice.

But her brown-nosers are adamant.

She's going to win a major on the LPGA tour and make a cut on the PGA tour, they just know it.

But if she does neither, it will be because of some imaginary injury, or, excuse me for chuckling, "heat exhaustion."

The Wie-wee's are good for a lot of laughs, I'll say that for them.

A) If you haven't figured it out by now, I pay Alex to write 180% contrary entries, to keep my blog-chat moving along.

B) Al Shipnuck does not mention the Publinx, so you are certainly speaking for him when you insinuate that it came into his thought process.

C) Elitist is such a cop-out. I pay you to come up with better insults than that. Plus, it intrigues me that you view an elitist as your chum. Does that mean that you favor elitism?

D) How did you feel when Manning finally got his championship? I sense some similarities between the two (Manning and Wie.)

I'm always looking for new angles, readers, so fire away at my points.

RonMon,

I'm sure you meant 180 degrees.

Your noting of what you consider as similarities between Manning and Bubbles will require a little explanation.

That is, assuming you're referrinmg to Peyton rather than Eli
02/05/07 @ 20:39
Comment from: RonMon [Visitor] Email
Absolutely correct...degrees.

Manning had been vilified in the press for his close but no cigar record, as has Wie. The difference is, there is a higher, "where no woman has gone before," level for Wie, that does not exist for NFL players like Manning. Manning was able to exorcise his demons by winning the NFL championship. When Wie wins on the LPGA Tour, or a major on the LPGA Tour, or makes a cut on the PGA Tour, will her demons be exorcised?

Eli Manning, well, he has suffered from terrible coaching at the NFL level.
02/05/07 @ 22:08
Comment from: Alex [Visitor]
RonMon,

What are the "demons" to which you are referring?

Bubbles herself has stated repeatedly that there is nothing wrong with her game. Virtually all of her admirers say that they don't care if she ever wins anything.

She doesn't need any rite of "exorcism." She doesn't need any more coaches, agents, or sparkly watches. She probably could use someone to closely monitor her diet. She's getting pretty chubby, and she's a little too old for baby fat. In fact, my wife says that girls of her age should be losing their baby fat by now. Then again, Pat Hurst still does pretty well

This argument would be over if Miss Wie joins the LPGA tour and starts a two year full exemption she "earned" by finishing well within the top 40 LPGA golfers prior to last years Corona Championship. If I recall correctly she placed in the top 10 with $184,000 earned before April.

Upon joining (if she so chooses) she would also get credit for the money she "earned" last season that would place her at number fifteen on the LPGA ADT official list, while playing in only eight women's events.

For the event sponsors to leave her out of the field at the Kraft would be simply ridiculous.

Apparently some posters are more concerned with the weight changes a teenage girl goes through than the quality of her golf game. I think it is safe to say they “are stuck on stupid”.

I would say that Bubbles obvious portliness and the quality of her golf game are going in different directions.

Sort of an inverse proportion.

I seem to recall a poster named Alex who said Michelle Wie would never get into Stanford. As she toured the campus last week I couldn't help but think back to Michelle's 2003 interview with 60 minutes when she was asked why she wanted so badly to attend Stanford when she could make millions of dollars as a pro golfer. Without hesitating she replied. "Because I want to be a educated person". As fortune would have it and through her hard work, she will have the opportunity to accomplish both.

Alex for someone who touts your academic credentials so boastfully, you really are an ignorant man. To make such insensitive comments about a young girl, who has personally not done anything to you, is crass, cruel and crude beyond belief.

Calling you a "Bottom Feeder" seems far too kind, yet it is a pretty common term for someone of your chosen profession.

One-Putt,

You seem to have given up on Bubbles' golf game and glommed onto to her potential as a poster girl for higher education.

She may become a poster girl for Jenny Craig.

One-Putt,

Careful there, son.

Bubbles hasn't yet graduated from the prestigious Punahou School.

She won't be attending classes at Stanford for about seven months. That is, if she attends classes at all with her busy golfing schedule.

She's going to discover that the competition at Stanford is a lot tougher than that in highschool which she attended part time. No sponsors' exemptions at Stanford.

Don't bestow the mantle of "summa cum laude" just yet.

Michelle is a wonderful young golfer and will regain her form. I also must agree with Phil, that Michelle is a fine role model for young women everywhere.

"She may become a poster girl for Jenny Craig."

In your state of dementia, Twiggy at the height of her popularity would have looked overweight. Alex you are the prime example of why young women turn to bulimia in order to fit a male’s perceived notion of what looks “right”. Michelle is well within the norms for a 17 year old 73 inch female and is by no means overweight. Apparently you lied about having women in your life or you couldn’t help but notice that at certain times women appear bloated or carry a few extra pounds around.

"One-Putt, you're nothing but a bleeding heart."

If that means I was raised to have compassion along with being a "Gentleman", I thank you for the compliment Alex.

There you go again Alex underestimating Miss Wie and her determination to achieve her goals. Michelle is a very balanced young woman that will find a way to accomplish all her goals.

One-Putt,

The way Bubbles' golf game is going, I don't know how it is possible to underestimate her.

I hope for her sake that one of her goals is not to be able to flap her arms and fly. With the additional avoirdupoise, I don't think she'll have the strength.

By the way, wasn't Lard's main goal to be in the Masters'? When do yoi think she'll reach that goal? Hmmm?
