Nick Watney's irons begin at the Five (sic): Shape of our bags to come?

One of my favorite e-newsletters is a new one from the folks at The Wire. It’s called Tour Van, and gives you a synopsis of what each week’s winners on most of the major tours were playing. Check out Nick Watney’s bag last week:

Driver: Titleist Pro Titanium 905R (11.5 degrees, UST Proforce V2 79 shaft)
3-wood: Titleist PT 906F2 (15 degrees, True Temper Dynamic Gold shaft)
Utility: Titleist PT 585.H (21 degrees, Aldila NV 105 shaft)
Irons(5-PW): Titleist 695MB (True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts)
Wedges: Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Wedges (56 and 60 degrees, True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts)
Putter: Scotty Cameron prototype

I get to thinking that it must be a misprint, as he totals 12 clubs. I imagine that they mean 3-PW, but who knows? My point is this…if we add a second fairway metal (a 5 or a 7), or a second utility club, or a lob wedge (any two of the three will do,) we hit 14 clubs and who needs the 3 and 4 irons?

A friend of mine bought a set of Ping irons the other day. He asked me why I still play Mizuno blades. I told him that these blades would be my last set of forged blades, and that perhaps I was putting off the inevitable. With luck, they’ll last me until I’m long in the tooth, but truth be told, I expect my set make-up and clubhead type to change radically over the next decade. If you’re in the market for new irons and metals, consider my words as you mull your purchase.

DON’T FORGET THIS RECENT POST:
I’ve put out a challenge this week over my buffalogolfer.com e-newsletter, engaging our readers on the Buffalo website in a challenge with the readers of TravelGolf.Com. As you know (see the icon down below, to the left?) I will be playing 100 holes of golf in one day this June, to raise money in the battle against cancer at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. To find out why, VISIT THIS PAGE. Over the next month, I’ll be tallying up the support from both sides, to determine who has the bigger heart. We’ve seen contributions from Wolfrum and Mario already from the TG side, while a fundraiser at the Buffalo Golf Show raised a huge chunk of our current total.

As such, the fund raising challenge begins today, and ends on May 23. Make sure that you add a little note when you contribute, to let us know which side you represent. Here’s the link (LINK) or, if you like, you can click the icon down left if icons are your thing. Either way, thanks for visiting and thanks for your support. Oh, tell your friends…they can count for TG, too.
