Monday PGA Blog: Last major at Southern Hills… 2001 USGA Open

I did a little digging (with a kid’s beach shovel) and came up with these results from a few year’s back. What’s interesting is how many players are still viable threats this year. One interesting, totally-unrelated footnote is…Steve Flesch is off the waiting list and into the tournament proper with his R-T win last week (rest of waiting list at bottom.)

276 R Goosen (Rsa) 66 70 69 71, M Brooks 72 64 70 70

The putting adventure, part one.

277 S Cink 69 69 67 72

The putting adventure, part two.

278 R Mediate 71 68 67 72

Didn’t he get hurt in the final round here, or near the end of the third round? Could’ve, should’ve, didn’t.

281 T Kite 73 72 72 64, P Azinger 74 67 69 71

To paraphrase the PGA Tour, these guys are old!

282 V Singh (Fij) 74 70 74 64, A Cabrera (Arg) 70 71 72 69, D Love 72 69 71 70, K Triplett 72 69 71 70, P Mickelson 70 69 68 75

Three to consider, two to ignore, I’ll let you line them up.

283 T Woods 74 71 69 69, M Gogel 70 69 74 70, M Allen 77 68 67 71, S Garcia (Spn) 70 68 68 77

Matt Gogel and Mike Allen aside, here’s a Tiger comeback and a Sergio final-round bail-out.

284 S Hoch 73 73 69 69, C DiMarco 69 73 70 72, D Duval 70 69 71 74

Hoch is old, Duval is broken again, and DiMarco, a long-shot.

Waiting List for 2007 Tournament Proper

Alternates:
1. VAN PELT, Bo – Tulsa, Okla. (77)
3. BOHN, Jason – Acworth, Ga. (85)
4. LEANEY, Stephen – AUSTRALIA (86)
5. PURDY, Ted – Phoenix, Ariz. (87)
6. GAY, Brian – Windermere, Fla. (93)
7. MARINO, Steve – Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (94)
8. DAVIS, Brian – ENGLAND (95)
9. ESTES, Bob – Austin, Texas (96)
10. FRAZAR, Harrison – Dallas, Texas (97)
11. MALLINGER, John – Long Beach, Calif. (99)
12. LONARD, Peter – AUSTRALIA (100)

Also, while I’m at it, the PGA should be ashamed of its on-site course presentation. There is no 18-hole course map, and the hole-by-hole analysis features ridiculous beauty shots, from contorted angles, of the putting surfaces.

Sorry if I made the pacemaker skip a beat or two. I'm here for the scoops, to beat the best in the business to the most critical information. I'll warn you next time.
