Well, not exactly Mount Olympus, but close. The list of Walker Cup hopefuls thins even more as the great eight loses weight. Allow me to elaborate.

Kyle Stanley bogeyed two of his final three holes to lose to the outmatched David McDaniel. Jon Curran ran into a Columbian Buzzsaw (not an illegal cocktail on the DEA hitlist) named Jhonattan “Las” Vegas and was demolished, demoralized, and demithified, 7 and 5. Gene Elliott is out, 4 and 2 to Eddie Olson. Only Michael Thompson of the great unwashed (read as not yet on the Walker Cup team) was able to promote his candidacy another round. After 20 holes and some spotty play, MT dispatched a game Bryce Ledford. The question, then, is the following: Who won that matters?

Rocinante of the week, George Zahringer, spotted his opponent the first three holes, then woke from his wee nap to post a two-up victory. On to the round of sixteen goes King George the Third. Colt Knost, the APL champion most likely to skip the Masters, worked his way to a 3 & 2 victory over Brendan Gielow, while Walker Cup teammate Jamie Lovemark prevailed in 21 holes versus a clearly-game Josh Dupont. Finally, the three remaining non-Americans all prevailed. In addition to Vegas, Nick Taylor of Canada won by 5 & 4 over Kyle Ellis, while the darling of Chinese Taipei, Pan Cheng Tsung, squeaked by Ji Moon, 1 up.

RonMon’s Walker Cup Watch
1. Michael Thompson
2. Sihwan Kim (if he wins, he’ll have two USGA championships at Olympic.)
3. Derek Fathauer (if he wins)
4. George Zahringer (if he wins)
5. Some dude who already lost.
