Woody Austin...One Bad Dude at Presidents Cup

As far as I’m concerned, Woody Austin can talk all he wants. He came to play in Montreal. Some guy named David Toms made two birdies in 18 holes today, against two strangers called Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabattini. Fortunately for Toms, he was paired with W.A., who parried a mere seven birdies, including each of the final three holes of the match. Finding themselves two down with three to play, Austin and ??? won 16 and 17, and only a birdie by fellow opinionate Sabo kept the Gringos from a ridiculous comeback. As it ... full post »

Letter to Augusta: Keep Colt in 2008 tournament

Sunday September 16, 2007 | 21:39:38 262 words, 2273 views
As speculators speculate that Colt Knost will make a formal announcement of his professional aspirations this week, I am hoping for two things. The first is that he shows up at Turning Stone for the Turning Stone Championship, as my sorry behind will be there with media credentials. The second is that Augusta National grant him his place in the 2008 Masters, in spite of being a professional. Let’s be honest. The spirit of the amateur at The Masters ended when Walker Cup slots for USA and GBI were rescinded. Heck, there was a time when even ... full post »

Solheim Cup Live Scoring Ticker: Hard To Find, Hard To Ignore

Sunday September 16, 2007 | 09:12:25 200 words, 2029 views
If I weren’t such an intrepid and ruthless internet sleuth, I’d have given up on finding Live Scoring for the Solheim Cup. If you visit the PGA Tour website, you are bombarded by LIVE@ this and LIVE@ that. They simply beg you to watch live feeds of everyone and everything. The Ladies European Tour is a bit more coy, however. Go to the main Solheim Cup page and you’ll see nothing…you’re lucky to find the ENGLISH button. You have to click the 2007 Solheim Cup to get to the real deal. It’s somewhat hidden ... full post »

Phat Guys Get It On In Idaho as Prelude To Nationwide Tour

Wednesday September 12, 2007 | 12:18:00 181 words, 2221 views
“I am excited to participate in this special event for such a worthwhile cause,” said Zuback. “It is always a treat to play with and compete against PGA TOUR players, especially Bubba, Jason and Kevin Stadler, guys I hold in high regard. I look forward to hitting it hard and hitting it long, and giving our team a chance to earn some money for the charitable organizations we represent.” So spaketh Jason Zuback, Pharmacist and hitter of prodigious distances, in an Acushnet press release. We’ve been waiting for this type of match-up for years. I watched John Daly weakly fail to ... full post »

GB&I Closing Gap at Royal County Down's Walker Cup

Sunday September 9, 2007 | 11:27:35 169 words, 2067 views
It’s one of Murphy’s Laws…as soon as you pay homage, it bites you in the arse. Murphy was a good Irishman, and his laws seem to favor the GB&I team at the moment. Rory McIlroy has just whipped Billy Horschel, and Rhys Davies is soundly smacking Rickie Fowler around the course (dormie three on the sixteenth tee.) Those two victories will close the gap to 10-8, favor USA. In the remaining six matches, GB&I finds its-selves 1-up in two, all square in two, and 1-down/3-down in two more. The key match, as registered ... full post »

Walker Cup at Royal County Down: Sunday Morning Eruption

Sunday September 9, 2007 | 09:38:36 377 words, 2149 views
Since so many horrifying adjectives are associated with Ireland and Sundays, I’ve decided to go volcanic to describe what happened this morning at Royal County Down in the Walker Cup matches. The USA did the unthinkable…by sweeping four multi-player matches, the younger side took a commanding 10-6 lead heading into the afternoon singles matches. This is a team that was picked to lose, and they still might. We remember Crenshaw’s USA side in 1999 in the Ryder Cup. Carrying a monstrous deficit into Sunday’s singles, they stormed the walls (and angered golf fans everywhere with their greenside tap ... full post »

BMW Championship of FedEx Cup: Excitement by the Numbers

Thursday September 6, 2007 | 15:04:29 76 words, 2105 views
Here are some first-round numbers on which to chew: Numbers 22 and 27-29 on the points list all shot even or worse, including one withdrawal. Numbers 30, 32 and 34 all shot -5 or better in the first round. Number 33 shot -3. Number 31 shot +1. That’s exciting! Guys throwing up on themselves to stay in the top 30. Guys on the outside playing great to have a shot at a spot in Atlanta. One final musing: Hunter Mahan will shoot 61 on either Friday or Saturday. full post »

FedEx Cup at Deutsche Bank Championship: Six To Watch

Monday September 3, 2007 | 12:31:14 140 words, 2386 views
Other than Aaron Oberholser, who is clearly the guy to watch today for FEC movement and entry into the BMW Championship, here are my suggestions for story lines: 1. Fredrik Jacobson…-3 through five holes. Currently number 97 on the FEC points list. He needs two top-five finishes to have any chance at Atlanta. 2. Robert Allenby…also -3 through five. At number 30, he is in terrific shape for Atlanta, but could make it easier on himself if he places top-four today. 3. Jason Gore & Bart Bryant…83rd and 80th on FEC points list. Need high finishes ... full post »
