Ernie "Crash" Els back to old tricks at Dunhill Champs

There he was, having birdied three in a row, about to reduce Nick Dougherty to a puddle of Faldo, and the wee mon, the little man on his shoulder, smacked Ernie upside the head. Triple-bogey, bogey, and two holes later, Ernie is done.

Great article by Ernie this month in GD on how to drive the ball far. Surprisingly, we never seem to get any mental-game articles from the big easy. How far OB did that drive on 15 at St. Andrews’ Old Course go? I cannot imagine him making triple from IB (in bounds).

Whooops…Justin Rose just bogeyed the 17th, giving Nearly-Winless Nick a three-stroke cushion with two to play. Justin Rose, heir to the throne of Els. Sorry, PGA Punter, but Rose has a way to go in the mental game, too.

Oh, well ... at least the Big Easy still has a great swing!

Well, RonMonster, I was watching when Ernie made his triple. He did not drive it OB. It was just another great example of the subtleties of links golf. He hit a great drive but his 2nd shot into the double green caught the wrong side of the spine, and went way left to the wrong side of the back bunker. He was left with no direct putt to the hole and because of the firm turf, flop shots are out of the question. So he tried to skirt the bunker perfectly to get as close as possible for his par putt. High risk. But he putted just a hair too weakly and the ball trundled into the bunker. Then he blasted out long and three-jacked. I think he choked in judgement moreso than execution. Should have putted a little more conservatively and taken his par chances on a 10-15 footer for par. Of course, this is in hindsight, which we all know is 20-20.
