Golf news from a Saturday: LPGA, Nationwide, Heath and Boo

Two fantastic 63s took place on a Saturday around the world. Suzann Pettersen’s star is rising at an unbelievable rate, and the 9-birdie round she tossed at Laura Davies, Paula Creamer, and Annika Sorenstam goes a long way toward placing her as co-1 with Lorena Ochoa. Davies and Creamer tossed 66s, a score that used to mean something, and got dusted by three by the Norwegian. On the Nationwide tour, a young player with a classic name slapped nine birdies and a bogey on the board for his 63. Marc Turnessa opened up a five-stroke advantage (Pettersen’s is seven) on the field, but has a tougher task ahead. 36 holes remain for Turnessa, while Pettersen lacks one round more for her title.

Perhaps the most refreshing news is the announcement that Yogi and Boo-Boo Bear will represent the USA at the World Cup of Golf in China this Fall. Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, high school teammates from Milton, Florida (land of Bubba Watson) will replace Aaron Oberholser and Sean O’Hair. Oberholser abandoned, so O’Hair lost his slot (which kind of sucks.) Weird rule, but that’s the way they get top-shelf players to agree to play…let them select their partner. Not that this is a tournament in trouble, but they don’t even have a web site yet! (whoops, I lied…here’s the link.)
