Normal guy Jeff Quinney at Northern Trust Open...Pick Him!

I like Jeff Quinney. His preshot routine looks like a bird with a broken wing going back, and looks nothing like his actual stroke. It reminds me of Billy Mayfair a few years back with that traditional putting rehearsal, then BAM, the outside-in stroke. With Quinney, though, it goes from bad to good, whereas with Billy, it was 180 degrees the other way (shockingly, no YouTube video on Billy.)

Quinney aced the 6th (the donut green at Riviera) yesterday, picking up a stroke on Mickelson, who birdied. Q. is one back going into Sunday, and merits a chance against Phearless Phil, who tends to not run away with things. Quinney strikes me as a fairly regular guy, although that certainly would change with a win and more tour success. Here’s why, courtesy of ASAP Sports:

Q. Were you shocked? It looked like the noise shook you for a second.
JEFF QUINNEY: Yeah, I’m overdo on the hole-in-one celebrations. Yeah, basically had one last year at the Bob Hope and this year with the caddie – I’ve got a different caddie this time but you don’t know whether to hug or high-five or just in between and probably just looks sloppy. Adrenaline goes through your system. It’s an amazing feeling. It was almost like a touchdown end zone dance or something but basically, we need to get that organized with my caddie and plan it a little bit better.

Nice. Just like a regular dork…got to plan the celebration. And later, after discussing hockey and his affiliation with the Phoenix Coyotes and The Great Gretzky:

Q. Any body checking planned for tomorrow?
JEFF QUINNEY: Well, maybe me and my caddie. (Laughter).

I guess they’ve ironed that one out.
