Masters Sunday: Snedeker and Flesch's words betray them
You might have noticed that I’ve taken up temporary residence at a new address: ASAP Sports. I blog here, so this is home (until Mark kicks me out!) That other place feeds full-text interviews of every major sports event in the country to your email box, so I kind of sort of have a use for it, y’know?
Without a doubt, the two most impressive feeds from yesterday were those spoken by Brandt Snedeker and Steve Flesch. These two fellow, among the top four contenders at the tournament, are candid, thoughtful and cautious. They utilize the English language to develop ideas and themes to the max. Seriously.
Snedeker spoke of his matches against his older brother, Hayme, as pivotal points in the golf-growth period. He also discussed his informal four-month membership at Augusta during his first Masters as an amateur. Most significant, he discussed the third shot into 15 at Augusta. A hole that previously offered up platters of eagles has morphed into a copy of the 17th at Valderrama, where players will probably spin a wedge off the green, into the pond. How Immelman did not is still up for debate and he did it in a grouping with Snedeker yesterday.
Flesch, given his age and world-tour experience, spoke with a different timbre. He clarified exactly how he qualified in (his two tournament victories WERE NOT automatic-bid events), what it’s like to watch the tournament on television and how to set goals based on that unwanted experience, and deflected questions that some half-wit asked him about Phil’s troubles.
Patience seems to be Flesch watchword for the week, while Snedeker is all about advantage. Perhaps waiting will work, perhaps shooting at pins will be the answer. I’ll be interested in what they have to say, long after what they shoot wanes.
