Golf A Sport Or Not

Tuesday June 24, 2008 | 22:51:16 145 words, 5908 views
Win a free golf book!

I challenge anyone to name a sport other than golf where the toughest event in the world could be won by a competitor with a stress fracture and torn ACL. As bad as those injuries were, the nature of the sport of golf allowed the injured Tiger Woods to win the US Open.

I do rank the 2008 US Open as the greatest US Open of all time (beyond Merion in 1950, which would be the second greatest US Open of all time). I base my margin on one slim hole…the 91st and final hole. If Hogan had gone beyond the regulation playoff, I’d go back to the nominating committee.

Now that my distraction is ended, I ask you to reconsider golf as a sport. Is it aerobic? No. Does it require excessive strength or agility of motion? No. Is it the greatest game ever? Yes.

Just a few: chess, any flavour of pool, most of motorsports, archery, boxing, shooting.

Stephen Hendry once won the World Snooker Championship (quite a big deal in the UK) with a stress fracture in his arm. This led to a flurry of articles questioning whether snooker is really a sport.
