Professional Golf In USA Risks {Moron} Label
Wednesday July 9, 2008 | 17:57:21 188 words, 7993 views
==Tiger Battling Boredom; Perry in Firestorm of Controversy== ==He risks the respect of his peers, however.== The first line above is a tag line from a TGC member email today. The second comes from the article itself. If you did not guess that “he” is Kenny Perry, he is. If you wonder why anyone would show disrespect toward the old-timer, welcome to the PGA Tour. Either the players or the writer edged dangerously close to membership in morons’r me. Perry didn’t qualify outright for The Masters, couldn’t physically put up with 36 holes of US Open qualifying the day after his Memorial Invitational victory, and had no desire to bail on his commitments to stateside tourneys when an Open Championship invitation came his way. And the problem is …? Why would anyone begrudge Kenny Perry his success and the due rewards that accompany it? Might a few be jealous? More than a few. Disrespect? Hardly. If greatness were reflected by Major championships, Orville Moody, Dave Marr, Jack Fleck, Ben Curtis and Richard Burton (not the actor) would be acclaimed as great. They are not, but Kenny Perry just might be. Comments:
Well, his shirts are not as hideous this year, so that's nice.

RonMon, I had the same thoughts as you when I read that crap on TGC.
I agree with you here 100 percent, Ron Mon. It's obvious to me that Perry is a great guy. Remember, this is a man who takes off time each year (is it Oct.?) to coach his high school golf team for free. And if part of his reason for skipping the British Open is that he wanted to honor previous commitments, it just further underscores what a class act he is.
Anyone who doesn't appreciate Perry is simply a victim of the shallow, superficial values that prevail in this modernistic age. Along with Vijay Singh, he's the only player on tour I truly root for.
Although I was surprised and disappointed (and you disagreed, Ron Mon) that Woody Austin didn't take his first opportunity to play in the British Open last year, it's not the same situation for Kenny. He has played in it before, not that brilliantly, and has said all along that his whole schedule is based on making Ryder Cup. His best bet for consolidating his position is obviously John Deere. Kudos to the man. Have heard no criticism in UK for his decision either.

Wendy, welcome back! We've missed your 'ever so unique' point of view here in the blogs! ;)
Monny, you know we don't often agree; but on this one we do - Kenny Perry has what it takes to become a true golf great. Let's hope he makes it!

Decamped to Ewen Murray @ SkySports for a breather, but missed your accent, Ron.
Fortunately, have Ryder Cup "alert" on your blogs, (you're not really going to ignore said event, are you -per Bastable stats.?) so perfect excuse to stick my oar in again, I'm afraid. Are Paul's biceps salacious? Leave a comment: |
