FedEx Cup Points Distribution Formula Turns Camilo Villegas Into Runner-Up
Sunday September 28, 2008 | 20:11:04 80 words, 28743 views
Chew on these statistics: Camilo Villegas: M/C at Barclays Vijay Singh: 1st at Barclays Somehow, I think that an M/C and a T-3 are worth more than Vijay’s “other” finishes. Way to go, PGA Tour. Nice job with the FedEx Cup point distribution. Methinks a freshman stats student might have come up with a better formula. Comments:

Wow Ron Mon, you're actually right!

Happens all the time...
Actually, Vijay did better than Villegas in the regular season, and that has to count for something. Are you advocating a points system where the regular season would count for nothing?
Also, Vijay would have fared better at the Tour Championship if he had some pressure. The only pressure he had (as he mentioned in the interview) was to make sure he did not sign an incorrect scorecard or get disqualified. This was Vijay's only finish outside the top 10 at this course in 8 appearances. Villegas played the whole round with bravado and a bit of recklessness (double bogey, bogey, 4 birdies in 5 holes or something like that thereafter etc....) I think the stats guys did just fine last year and this year, and you can Monday morning quarterback every year.

Good point about the regular season...to where should we send your referral check?

Why should the regular season count for anything, other than to QUALIFY FOR these supposed playoffs? No other major sport does that, unless you want to count Nascar. If the PGA Tour ever wants this FedEx Cup to have serious chops, the average fan needs to be able to observe the win happening - and without the use of HAL the computer.

Another excellent point...duplicate check, I guess.
