The bandwagon of sportswriters has gained size and strength since Mrs. Doubtfire was named the next big thing at Ryder Cup captain school. I may be the only pseudo-sportswriter to occupy the state of LMAO. LMAO because Europe is imitating the Americans for a change. Next thing you know, their team will charge across a putting green before the hole is decided. The whole thing is a debacle because they Larry Nelsoned poor Sandy Lyle. A debacle because they dragged Olie, JM Olazabal, back into the fray for some unknown reason at the 11th hour. ... full post »

Tiger Woods and President Obama, Unofficial LPGA Wins and more

Sunday January 25, 2009 | 15:35:06 759 words, 15006 views
Point # 1: So Tiger Woods is apolitical. And? Face it: most of us sound like moron cadets when discussing politics. We have a nice intro point but can hardly provide substance to back it up. Forget connecting prior and posterior events to our point. Did anyone miss the point of Tiger’s speech? If so, read it again now: “I grew up in a military family - and my role models in life were my Mom and Dad, Lt. Colonel Earl Woods. My dad was a Special Forces operator and many nights friends would ... full post »

Bow your head for Paul Goydos and his daughters

Wednesday January 21, 2009 | 15:21:16 99 words, 15329 views
Paul Goydos is a dry man, except for a brief while along the 17th at TPC last Spring vs. Sergio Garcia. He is also a good man , raising daughters while an ex-wife battle addiction. Over the weekend, that ex-wife passed away and Goydos left the sun to travel home to the clouds, to impossibly console his children and to wonder if the former love of his life is finally at peace. Hopefully those of us who read this can take a bit of time to bow our heads and meditate on all that this means for a ... full post »

File Tadd Fujikawa under NEVER SAW THIS COMING at SONY Open

Saturday January 17, 2009 | 18:25:07 226 words, 11218 views
Nine birdies, one bogey, one missed four-footer on 16 (although I hate those assertions; more on this later) and Tadd Fujikawa is the current leader in the clubhouse of the SONY Open in Hawaii. A kid whose dad was arrested late last year for drug possession, a kid who gave up at least one more year of high school to turn pro and struggle a la Justin Rose last year, a kid far to the regrettable side of 5 feet 8 inches tall (Hogan’s height), is -8 for the tournament. My guess is he’ll end up top seven ... full post »

Golf Course Strategy: Open For Debate

Saturday January 3, 2009 | 07:51:50 578 words, 14055 views
Tripp Davis is as good a player as I could ever hope to be. He makes trips to my neighborhood for the Porter Cup and typically shoots under 300 for 4 rounds. He played division one golf at Oklahoma and hob-nobbed with the finest golfers of his day. By hob-nobbing, I don’t mean the traditional interpretation of nobbing off some very angry hobs; instead, I defer to “going toe-to-toe for a meager number of starting spots against teammates, all the while keeping a smile on your face and hatred in your heart.” These days, Mr. Tripp designs golf courses, in addition ... full post »
