Davis Love III: Seriously?

Davis Love III, over-20 year golf professional and golf course architecture partner, had this to say about Torrey Pines golf courses and their greens:

DAVIS LOVE III: Well, obviously a good start, tough wind and a little cooler than we’re used to. But I’m sure it’s tougher on the South Course. So it was a good start, and I putted well. They did something to the greens from Tuesday when I played a practice round. They were much smoother and you could make some putts today. They were more like the South Course.

Listening to him on XM Radio’s PGA Tour station, his quote was a bit different. He said ” I don’t know what they did to the greens, but they were less bumpy,” in reference to the North Course.

This is a guy who has played golf on tour since 1988, and has helped to design and build golf courses all over the world. Don’t you think that he should know exactly what they did to the golf greens to make them smoother? Honestly, “something” just doesn’t cut it. They cut and rolled them, they deflated the bumps with a pin, they put acne cream on the surfaces and the zits went away, heck, they squeezed the zits and puss came out.

I wouldn’t expect this much from a younger statesman, yet I do demand more from a fellow like DL3. Buck up and show up, Davis! Make the old man proud.
