Black American History Month: Uneven Fairways on The Golf Channel
No doubt my bosses will get mad at me for bumping you to another site, but I can’t ignore this series. The first golf book I ever reviewed was titled Forbidden Fairways and was written by Calvin Sinette. It details the history of black american golfers and is an impeccable volume. That mine is signed and dedicated by the author makes it that much more __________ (fill in your own adjective) to me.
Driving around to nowhere in particular (a few miles from yonder), I heard a tease on PGA Tour network for Uneven Fairways, a Samuel L. Jackson-narrated series on The Golf Channel. It begins to air on February 11th, but you can check out their site (use their search functionality, as they don’t feature it on the home page yet) for some advance videos on Althea Gibson, Bill Spiller, Charlie Sifford and others. In a time when we try to make everything equal, fair, just and indiscernible, this look back to a time when all was separate and unequal is unavoidable, necessary, and unforgettable.
