RE: Impending madness of RonMon
To the flock…2009 has been one of my better golfing years. My handicap index is down to a 4.7, despite not having played the same course twice. I’ve been fortunate to visit a number of campos increibles, as Seve might put it, returning numbers to be proud of. Most of the credit can be placed in two bushels: Discover Golf Buffalo’s fitness program and my trusty Wilson 8813 putter. My game is better from tee to green, due to Bob Gosch’s tutelage; my putting stroke has returned, thanks to the feel of the 8813. With one summer month left in the 2009 western New York season, I am about to embark on a putting challenge the likes of which I have never seen nor read of.
I will abandon my 8813, in favor of its sister putter, the Wilson 8802. The putters are similar, with the 8802 lacking the sight lines of the larger number. I will pit the traditional blade putter against the newest of the new, the Boccieri mid-weight Heavy putter.
Why? Why not? At the top of my putting game, rather than play out the string, I intend to determine if the toe hang (Wilson 8802) or the face balanced (Boccieri) will prove to be the winner. Why not use the 8813? Simple. It knows me too well. Better to take two brand new putters to level the playing field.
Which playing field? Six courses I’ve never played. Five Sandhills courses (Little River Farm, The Pit, Tobacco Road, Southern Pines and Tot Hill Farm) and one mystery course along I-79.
When? August 9-14, 2009. Stay tuned and you’ll learn which putter played its way into my bag for the Fall coaching season.
Over and out.
