The trek toward 108 holes and other musings
As some of you know, I’ll be playing 108 holes in one day on August 30th. I’m not doing it for kicks; the event supports a fund raising event for western New York’s cancer treatment center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Here’s the link that tells you more about it. I’ve spent the past two weeks running a golf camp for middle school-aged golfers and decided to begin my training regimen as a means of staying amped and stoked for camp. For the first time in my life, I’m keeping a log of my training.
To give you an idea of my regimen, it breaks down into two possible workouts. If I have time to hit the gym, I go for 15 minutes of cardio warm-up, then 30 minutes of weights and abs. If I don’t have the hours needed, I head out for a run on the mean streets of my suburban oasis. I drove and measured five different routes, giving me 4, 3, 2, 1.5 and .7 mile runs, depending on my particular inclination that day. When I was younger, I would see the pounds melt away with each run; not true anymore. What I’m after isn’t weight loss, but fitness. I need to be ready to handle hot sun for 10 hours that Monday, so I’ll be pushing my legs, core and upper body to greater heights until then.

In addition to the golf marathon, I’m getting ready to spring some reviews on y’all. I’ll be looking at the hickory-shafted clubs of Sweetwood Golf, the wedges of Eidolon Golf, a few new golf books that I’m reading and two new courses in Lewiston and Baldwinsville, New York. The big, annual golf trip heads to Williamsburg, Va. in mid-July. The lads and I will play five public golf courses in Williamsburg and two ultra-exclusive, national private clubs. A visit to the Porter Cup is also on the agenda. Finally, some shirts, shoes and other accouterments will face the fierce fury of my testing power this summer. If you have suggestions for future reviews, send a message this way.
