Espiritu Santo Trophy to Korea at World Amateur Golf Team Championship
A funny thing happened this weekend: Korea dominated women’s golf. Not Jimin Kang, Jiyai Shin or Meena Lee, all of whom placed in the top ten at LPGA Malaysia. Instead, let’s turn our attention to the World Amateur Team Championship, run by the International Golf Federation and contested this year at Olivos Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Bluntly, when your three players finish 1-2-3, you win. Jung-Eun Han finished at -13 for three rounds, Ji-Hee Kim at -11 and Hyun-Soo Kim at -10. This domination was so complete that no other team had an individual post better than -5. Team USA was -9 for the event and a massive 25 strokes higher than the Koreans. Since the event counts the low two of three scores each day, the margin of victory was a mere 17 shots.
Ji-Hee Kim had an ace, two doubles and five birdies in her -4, and 10 birdies (five in a row) in her -9. Teammate Han posted nine birdies in her -7 and 3 birdies, 3 bogies and 2 EAGLES in her -4.
If this week’s men’s tournament is to hold a candle to the ladies’ event, the boys will have to post some serious numbers at nearby Buenos Aires golf club.
