Week 4 of Fantasy Golf-Wee changes and Missed ops
Do you know anyone else who left Nick Watney on the bench on Sunday? I did and it cost me 12 points. Not that Marc Leishman played poorly, but Watney chose Sunday to show up? On the heels of my abandonment and public decrial of Bubba “Take That, RonMon!!” Watson, it was a Torrey Pines weekend of missed opportunities for my fantasy golf team.
After opening with a -7 on the North course, Alex Prugh returned to also-ran status with three consecutive rounds over par on the South 18. No benefit from him, but that round cost me 6 points. When I benched Bill Haas on Friday for Prugh, however, the 8-stroke differential cost me 16 more points. Saturday’s decision to go with Charles Howell the +1 over Jhonny Vegas the -3 was another 8-point loss.
Mind you, I don’t expect to get every selection on the mark each week. It would be nice, though, to hit a few more deep-red figures. Now, on to the movers and shakers of Fantasy Golf Week Four…
Sung-hoon Kang tossed out a 64 on Thursday for the 20 point total, with Fowler and Prugh close behind. Friday brough a low of 65 from Bubba Watson, with Ben Crane (defending champion) on his heels with 66. The weekend dawned with a bunched field as all the cut-makers played the South course, with no one lower than 68. The weekend closed with Watney’s crazy 63, the first time all week that a multi-stroke gap (3, in this case) between the best and second-best scores was noted. Dustin Johnson’s fine 66 earned him 14 points, with anyone over par earning zilch.
The bonus babies were Watson (20), Philly Mick (10) and Johnson/Vegas (5) for their top-three finishes. If you had Johnson on Sunday, you picked up 19 points, while Watson was good for 32 points (12 + 20). Phil didn’t disappoint, with an 18-point Sunday performance. In our league, one team moved up 11 spots, nearly cracking the top ten. Another team jumped from 5th to 3rd, while RonMon remained mired in the bottom half of the second ten. I need two good weeks to stir up some interest and passion, so keep your fingers crossed that my selections for Phoenix are spot on.
