Fantasy Golf Update: February 9th, 2011
Nothing like having your regular Monday column pushed back two days by circumstance. I wish I could recall what the circumstance was, but you wouldn’t care, so it wouldn’t matter.
Nothing like swapping out a C block player for another guy, having your new guy miss the cut and having the guy you dumped, finish tied for fifth. Such was the case when I abandoned J.B. Holmes for Anthony Kim. I choked in the final hours and set the guy who had won twice at Scottsdale adrift for the formerly-on-a-run AK, who never got started and came up two shots shy of the cut. Holmes, meanwhile, opened with 65 and added twin 67s over the goofy weekend.
My weekend was a sad one, as both Kim and Vegas missed the cut, leaving me without a C block player. I missed out on DJ’s 64 and Bill Haas’ 65 on Thursday, the magical 62 that Fowler shot on Friday, and DJ and Overton’s Sunday 67/68 tandems. I’m picking the right guys most weeks, but not playing them when I need them most.
Enough about the losers (I’m 26th of 47 and dropping like lead.) My pal, Tryon To Win, has ridden a wave of great choices lately to surge into first place in our league. He had Mark Wilson all four days in Scottsdale, garnering daily and bonus points. TTW also missed out on the big Fowler, Johnson and Haas points (imagine how far out he would have been!) but certainly cleaned up by not only having a C block player in the mix, but having his name be Wilson.
I’ve amped up my strategy this week; I’m going for broke. Thursday I’m running with four guys at Monterrey Peninsula CC, the site of the lowest scoring in 2010. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that lightning will strike for me on four consecutive days and that I’ll find my way back into the top 20 of the league.
