Fantasy Golf during a Fantasy Week: Pro-Ams are difficult to pick
D.A. Points? Tom Gillis? Spencer Levin? Steve Marino for 71 holes? That is the nature of the principal Pro-Am week on the PGA Tour…it wreaks havoc with your selections. Case in point, even though I had Gillis, I imagined that he would struggle on Sunday, so I opted for two veterans in my B bracket, DL3 and VJ1. Gillis, of course, shot -2 while the other guys went+2 and Even. 8 shots lost there.
I’m disturbed by Dustin Johnson’s mailing-it-in over the last five holes. Not because it cost me 10 points (it cost most people 10 points) but because it speaks to a weakness in his ability to close. If you can’t close when you are out of an event, what makes you think you can draw on toughness when you are in the running? I don’t predict a big year for the big Myrtle Beacher…he needs to grow up a bit in the maturity aisle.
Alex Cejka started the week with a double-eagle on his first hole at Monterrey Peninsula CC and Bill Murray ended it with a Pro-Am title on his last. That’s as cool as it gets and should make the 2011 edition one for the memory cells. Poins was the point-getter on Thursday with a 63; JB Holmes and DJ Brigman (what was this, the week of initials?) went low on Friday with 64s; Jeff Maggert went off the board on Saturday with 62, while Jimmy Walker was on his heels, one back; Sunday, as expected, brought only a 66, as pressure mounted and play slowed.
Guys like Holmes, Appleby, Quigley and Maggert were one-hit wonders; if you didn’t hit them on their hot day, you got stuck with 71s and 72s. If you had Bryce Molder and Steve Marino, they brought you glory the first three days (if you knew when and could fold’em, you dumped them on Sunday.)
We’re heading into the end of the West Coast swing and should begin to see which players are rounding into form. Florida will bring its unique grasses into play, so count on the fellows who have traditionally played well there. If one or more of the rookies has a Florida background/upbringing, take a chance on him.
