Fantasy Golf Week Nine: Weather
Week nine in south Florida was a bear. The rains and the winds and the colds limited many players enoug; throw a devlish PGA National course into the brew and the week was ripe for high scores and little separation. Indeed, the margins between top and second daily scores were 1, 2, 1 & 1, respectively.
Very few players impacted the tournament like Rory Sabbatini. He was low man on days 2 and 3 (20 points each day) and the tournament champion (another 20 points). One-hit wonders for the week were Graeme McDowell and D.A. Points (round four), Charles Howell III (round three), Nate Green, Webb Simpson and Jimmy Walker (round two) and Greg Chalmers (round one). McDowell and Points did a lot of damage on Sunday, as they accounted for the top two scores and deprived a number of 66s of the magical 20 daily points.
For the second week in a row, I was able to sneak enough players through to have a C, 2 Bs and 2 As play on the weekend. Ironically, the one block (A) where I had some flexibility was the one that let me down. I had Kuchar and Donald and found a way to pick the higher of the two 3 days of 4 (cost me 20 points on the week!) On Saturday, both shot +2, rendering moot any distinction in apparel and snack choice.
So on we press to Doral. I’ve resisted Tiger and Phil, as I don’t expect that either will be in tournament shape. I know that they play well there, but I’ve got to make up ground on the leaders of the league, who sit a mere 108 points beyond my grasp. Time for a Fowler-esque comeback with three events remaining.
I think, personally, that these double-event weeks ought to run two tournaments and count double points. Now THAT would make it interesting.
