Maybe it is just a lull. After all Ryan Moore did OK I think in 2005 (apologies if that is incorrect) and in 2004 Casey Wittenberg shot 31 on the back nine to finish high up.

I think we should say the amateurs caused BJ shame- if they put him to shame they would be better than he. In other words, he would put them to shame. I'm speaking of his golf game and scores, not his personal issues.

One other thing. There isn't an amateur out there who could make the cut in the Masters. We are in a lull as far as young talent goes, since they all have Charles Howell III to look up to, or at least his parents, Thurston and Lovey.

Can't argue with you, Bobby Junior, about Bobby Senior. He was the product of his environment. Maybe we should say "Amateurs put Hal Sutton to shame." Oh, wait, he's had four wives. How about "Amateurs put Francis Ouimet to shame." That ought to do it.

I don't really like it when Bobby Jones is cast in a heroic light. He was no hero.

He was a sexist, homophobic, racist biggot. I might posess some of those properties, but to ban black people from playing in the Masters (and women as well, although I don't consider that a real issue)is pretty sick.

Charlie Sifford suffered from this blatant racism, but opened the door for Tiger to win the Masters four times. So non-whites got the last laugh.

At the end of the day, Bobby Jones was just an elitist snob from a rich family.

The fact is the amateur embarassment belongs to the Masters itself. There are just a handful of ams invited to play now. Not too long ago it was somewhere around a dozen and you could count on good play from a few. Now they have cut amateur spots so pros from the Moon Tour or whatever can get in. Lanny Wadkins made the inane statement on Friday that the "...Masters has always had a rich amateur tradition." Apparently Lanny has missed the last few years of the tournament. Bottom line: Bobby Jones, the greatest amateur and coincidentally the founder of the Augusta National Golf Club, has lowered his head and there is a tear in his eye.
