Golf, Sex and Augusta National
Tuesday January 31, 2006 | 14:16:01 209 words, 2472 views
My boys and I will occasionally utter this saying when we’re playing golf, “There’s nothing else we’d rather be doing, and that includes having sex …. because you can have sex anytime, but for golf you need daylight.” But that is not an either-or statement. Being all manly men, we all dig sex. Or at least we dig talking about sex. Ahem.
But today comes the news of a poll where over 30% of the respondents – equal amounts of both men & women – would give up having sex for a year in order to get ... full post »
Loren Roberts, Henrik Stenson: New studs emerging to challenge golf's status quo
Monday January 30, 2006 | 14:21:32 345 words, 1733 views
Only a few demented souls like myself probably witnessed the arrival of 2 new superstars on their respective tours this past weekend. Of course, I’m not talking about Tiger, for God’s sake - his dominance is clearly established. In the case of the PGA Tour, I just hope that the rest of the pack can summon enough good play to challenge Tiger in the Majors. I realize it’s early in the year but how in the world did he manage to hit it all over the yard, putt like crap and still win? C’mon guys, pick up the ... full post »
Big Dogs Woods, Els, Singh & Mickelson positioning for Majors
Thursday January 26, 2006 | 12:55:12 299 words, 1332 views
Now, the golf season really starts! Tiger is coming out of hibernation and, to hear him tell it at his first Q&A of the year, he’s loaded for bear. He said that, basically, he’s waaaaay ahead of where he was at the same time last year, so there is only fine tuning left to do to be ready for Augusta. These must be ominous words indeed for the rest of the golfing world. If memory serves, in 2005 Tiger had the 2nd best year of his already legendary career and he figures 2006 to be better ... full post »
Loren Roberts will dominate the Senior, er ah, Champions Tour in 2006
Tuesday January 17, 2006 | 10:46:35 234 words, 1792 views
Opening this week to much less fanfare than the PGA Tour did, is the Champions Tour. I still call it the Seniors Tour because, quite frankly, the players are all seniors but not all of them are champions - at least not at the PGA Tour level. It’s just a marketing ploy to make all the players sound more accomplished than they are. But I digress.
This year there’s going to be a new sheriff in town and his name is Loren Roberts – the Boss of the Moss. He played just 6 senior events last year ... full post »
Observations of Michelle Wie from 2 rounds on the PGA Tour
Saturday January 14, 2006 | 15:27:45 487 words, 2436 views
It is difficult to remain neutral on the subject of one Michelle Wie. After the disastrous first round 79, it was tempting to say she is totally out of her league. Then she authors a tremendous 68 in the second round and it was tempting to overpraise. Let’s have a look at what occurred and the surrounding situations.
Round One
Making it difficult for Wie, the hometown crowd was out in force. The tendency of a golfer in that situation is to try too hard, especially a young golfer. The wind was blowing but that is no excuse. It was blowing for ... full post »
Predictions for Michelle Wie at SONY
Wednesday January 11, 2006 | 08:35:49 125 words, 2422 views
There is no hotter topic in golf than
Michelle Wie trying to make the cut at age 16 in a PGA Tour event. Everybody has their opinions and I invite you to express them here. Here is mine:
She won’t do it.
As impressive a ball-striker as Wie is, she will need a terrific putting performance to make the cut. Yes, I know she has played this course a gazillion times and has much local knowledge. But nothing in her most recent performances leads me to believe this is the week.
But I must say that I would like to see her ... full post »
Let's all jump to conclusions about Vijay Singh, Stuart Appleby and Michelle Wie
Sunday January 8, 2006 | 22:54:36 333 words, 1482 views
There is no question, some of the PGA Tour stars want a shorter season than all of us fans do. It’s been a long time since we’ve had any real competition to satisfy our pro golf jones. The Mercedes had some good subplots afoot with some of them being Stuart Appleby going for the 3-peat, Vijay trying to re-establish his dominance of everybody not named Tiger, Michael Campbell and Olin Browne trying to prove last year was not a fluke, and Jim Furyk trying to win with new irons from a brand new sponsor. And now that we’ve finally had ... full post »
