Here in the North, those of us who are of the golfing persuasion spend these sub-freezing days dreaming of ideal golfing days in far off locations. This is the climate in which many a golfing trip is formulated. Nothing quite stokes the fire like planning out those road trips. Only a very few have the magic and stir the golfing public’s emotions. Seve Ballesteros is one of them. He captured our imaginations over 30 years ago when, as a 19-year old, he was the 2nd and 3rd round leader in the 1976 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Ballesteros eventually settled for a 2nd place tie with Jack Nicklaus, succumbing to Johnny Miller’s fantastic course-record-tying final round 66. But a legend was born. Well, whaddya know? Somebody who carries a little weight in the Wie camp has come to their senses and directly challenged the course Michelle Wie has been taking. She will now focus all of her energy and considerable talent towards trying to beat the best female players in the world. This revelation comes from David Leadbetter, who claims to have confronted Ms. Wie’s parents, citing a need for a long term plan in which Michelle Wie would gain confidence by actually winning on the LPGA. Allright, now, don’t tease us. Please say that what is starting to happen at the Wachovia Championship will last through Sunday. It is early on Friday but as the first half of the field is close to halfway through their rounds, the top five includes Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh & Phil Mickelson. It is not my intention to slight super golfers like Padraig Harrington or Trevor Immelman, but I think the golf world is starved for a showdown of the biggest names.
