Cup Fever culminates with Presidents Cup & Seve Trophy

As some of you know, including sharp-as-a-tack reader Wendy, team golf matches are my personal favorite form of golf competition. The Presidents Cup has just started and based on the previous two unbelievably fabulous competitions, it promises to be a wonderful affair. However, I’m not so sure that the U.S. squad won’t win decisively. Not so much that they have the 4 highest ranked golfers in the world on the side, because if, say, Tiger Woods were to dominate and win his match this afternoon, that is only 1/6 of the points available today. (Besides, the great one has a ... full post »

Steve Stricker and Lee Westwood Comebacks Should Give Heart to Ernie Els and Others

Wednesday September 26, 2007 | 09:32:13 331 words, 4075 views
The Steve Stricker comeback has to be the story of the year in golf. One of golf’s most promising young talents in the late 1990’s, Stricker dropped off the face of the earth because of hacker-like tee balls, primarily with the driver. It is really a 2-year comeback as his 2007 play was a continuation of his reversal of form in 2006. And this year – particularly the 2nd half - has been incredible, as he ... full post »

Forget FedEx: Fabulous Walker Cup Whets the Appetite for Solheim Cup

There are likely more than just a few folks in the world who have more than a passing interest in the outcome of the FedEx Cup. Personally, I don’t know a single one of them. Between my golfing buddies and me, our only interest is how this new playoff system and subsequent Fall Series will affect our golf fantasy league. Beyond that, the consensus is that this $10 million playoff is just a contrivance, about on a par with the WGC events. What really stirs the soul are team competitions, where the only thing at stake is pride. It seldom gets ... full post »

Walker Cup Telecast Translates to a Mere Glimpse of Magnificent Royal County Down

Wednesday September 5, 2007 | 14:48:47 206 words, 3875 views
We the golf-viewing public of the USA are getting Royally screwed this weekend when the Walker Cup will be played at one of the greatest - if not THE greatest - golf courses in the world: Royal County Down, aka Newcastle. A total of 24 matches will be played at the Royal County Down course during the two-day competition. Four foursomes (alternate shot) and eight singles matches are played on each of the two days of competition. ABC in its infinite wisdom will telecast only the final 2 hours of the competition on Sunday starting at 2pm EST. What that translates ... full post »
