Cup Fever culminates with Presidents Cup & Seve Trophy

As some of you know, including sharp-as-a-tack reader Wendy, team golf matches are my personal favorite form of golf competition. The Presidents Cup has just started and based on the previous two unbelievably fabulous competitions, it promises to be a wonderful affair. However, I’m not so sure that the U.S. squad won’t win decisively. Not so much that they have the 4 highest ranked golfers in the world on the side, because if, say, Tiger Woods were to dominate and win his match this afternoon, that is only 1/6 of the points available today. (Besides, the great one has a partner in each of his 4 matches prior to Sunday and for every great shot Woods might hit, his partner can undo it. And that has been his lot in many of these team competitions.) No, I think the reason the Americans will clinch the Cup by mid-afternoon on Sunday is because the International team has too many players not playing to their normal standard right now. Here are those who I think will under-perform over the next few days: Vijay Singh, Trevor Immelman, Stuart Appleby and Retief Goosen.

In an under-appreciated and smaller competition called the Seve Trophy, a team of top pros from Great Britain & Ireland being helmed by next year’s Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo are taking on a team of top pros from the rest of Europe being captained by Seve Ballesteros. But this competition is experiencing a couple of problems this year. First of all, the GB&I team has no one from Ireland in the side. And it’s being played IN Ireland. (I guess Nick Faldo didn’t think that Mike Weir should’ve been selected for the Presidents Cup either. Ahem.) Secondly, many of the big names have elected to skip this year’s event for varying reasons. So you won’t see regular Ryder Cup stalwarts Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald playing. Still, it’s worth a watch. The first day of competition was close, with Continental Europe having a slight advantage, winning three matches out of five. Have a look at some big names like Justin Rose, Colin Montgomerie, Thomas Bjorn and Paul Casey, as well as some of those young guns who might be in next year’s Ryder Cup team play under intense pressure. I promise it will be worth it.

Flattery or sarcasm? Anyway....

President's Cup: Damn, in total agreement with you. Never understand why captains put top players together, however, i.e. Woods/Furyk, (ANOTHER reason I wouldn't have paired Woods/Mickelson). They can only win 1 point and the opposition can make a sacrifice or be jubilant with any other result.

Seve Trophy: Don't think Faldo too put out re Donald & Westwood declining to play but shame on Harrington for dropping out. Faldo not the type to go for a sentimental pick, is he? Bet he wouldn't have conceded that putt to Singh/Weir either. Second day's play just finished and great to see "young guns" outplaying the stalwarts in some cases.

Pure flattery, Wendy. Nice of you to remember.

As day 2 begins at the Presidents Cup, it appears that the Seve Trophy will be a much closer competition. Unfortunately, the Americans mopped the course with the Internationals on day 1 just as I feared. But it must be said that the competition is far from over. The Internationals are quite capable of a reversal of form. However, after 2 days play at the Seve Trophy, the score is knotted at 5. I love it!

Fortunately husband videod Sunday's singles President's Cup. It was great viewing, and glad WE were right in the end. Don't understand why you say "unfortunately" for the first day - I wouldn't even have conceded the half. Obviously the Internationals were riled and the US more relaxed on the second day as a result. Thought of you and your interest in pressure psychology when Stewart missed his 3-foot putt, and had to quickly check you hadn't made any adverse comment! I'm sure he was furious that he had let his partner down more than anything else. Still he was brilliant on Sunday.

Not unhappy I missed rest of Seve Trophy in the end - marred by all the politics, and petty sniping, although confess I enjoyed Seve having a go at Harrington. Is Seve insane in thinking that he would be allowed another go at Ryder Cup captaincy?!

I turned off the Seve Trophy broadcast with an hour to go. At that point 8 of the 10 matches were in favor of GB&I. That, and I needed to finish up a few chores so I wouldn't have to miss much of the Presidents Cup.

Seve is done. And while I know it's a year off, I get the feeling that Faldo is going to be a disaster as captain. Old wounds, you know?

Did anyone read the Stuart Appleby article in last month's Golf Digest?

I used to like Appleby...now I think he is a complete smacked ass...

Yeah, I did see that and didn't have a good reaction to it either. I suspect everyone is letting him slide because of his first wife's tragic death right in front of his eyes. So he's still a sympathetic figure.

OK - will have to look Appleby article up up.

In meantime have just read Faldo's comments on Monty's participation in Seve Trophy, i.e. dealing with his emotions, lack of participation in team meeetings, having to be cajoled onto 18th green to support fellow team members, etc. "Old wounds", Shanks? Think there are going to be some new ones!!

OK - what specifically annoyed you about the Appleby article?

Been a while since I read it but I seem to recall him being a little smart-alecky in general. I don't recall any horrible statments but it didn't endear me to him either. Just felt a little negative.

Just think what the Aussies say about the English (especially when it comes to rugby).
