2008 Fantasy Golf Draft has Shanks Looking Good

Any time there is a draft in professional sports, hope is in the air. Fans of every team see only the possibilities, and rarely the pitfalls. Having said that, I proclaim my fantasy golf team for 2008 one of the serious contenders for the big prize as overall champions as well as a threat in major tournaments. If you do not participate in a fantasy league, I urge you to start one. It gives you a rooting interest every week of the season and draft day alone is worth the price of admission. Before I tell you who makes up my team, let me give you the basics of the fantasy league. The name of every participant goes into a hat from which the draft order for the first round is drawn. The draft order is reversed for even numbered rounds. Each participant gets 6 selections for his/her team. Winners are determined by prize money earned in any PGA Tour, Champions Tour or LPGA event. Prize pool payouts of 36%, 15% and 9% go to the top 3 teams for the entire golf season. Additional payouts of 8% are made to the top team for each of the 4 majors & the Players Championship. The fly in the ointment, however, is that the commissioner pre-determines which of the top earners are divided into pieces. This year, Woods was cut into 4ths, Mickelson & Singh were cut into 3rds and Furyk, Stricker, Sabbatini, Choi, Scott, Els & Toms were cut in half. The problem with taking a fraction of any of those top guys is that unless you get more than one part of the same guy, it’s very hard to win any of the Majors prizes, which totals to 40% of the prize pool. On the other hand, it’s hard to turn down ¼ of Woods when you know that’s a guaranteed $2.5+ million. There were a total of 20 participants this year. I was drafting in the number 6 spot in rounds 1, 3 & 5 and in the number 15 spot in rounds 2, 4 & 6. My team, in the order of selection: Justin Rose, half of Steve Stricker, the other half of Steve Stricker, Angel Cabrera, Brett Quigley and Suzann Pettersen. Strong. Comments:
Looks like you had a solid draft. If anyone is looking to play a new fantasy golf game, check out:
ProTourFantasyGolf DOT com This game takes a different approach and doesn't have a draft, but rather limits each golfer usage to twice per season.
What I enjoy is trying to identify obscure players that might do well. It makes me slightly ill when the talking heads on TV are asked who they like in a tournament always go with the chalk. Last year Anthony Kim was my pick. For 2008 I like Chris Stroud, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jin Park, and Yong-Eun Yang. One player I followed all last year was George McNeill because he is from my home town of Fort Myers. Honestly, If everyone knew the whole history, he was the story of the year on the PGA Tour in 2007.

I think the rookie to watch is streaky young Nick Flanagan, who got the rare battlefield promotion to the PGA Tour last year after winning his 3rd 2007 Nationwide Tour event. Problem was that as soon as that happened, the Tour had switched to Fed Ex playoff mode and, of course, he wasn't eligible. He played a few Fall Series events posting 2 top 20s and 2 missed cuts. This followed his streaky pattern from the Nationwide Tour where he had 5 missed cuts in just 17 events to go along with the 3 wins. This tells me that he doesn't "spit the bit" when he gets in the hunt, and that he is liable to manage a rookie win (or 2) this year on the PGA Tour. I had hoped to select him in the last round of my fantasy draft but somebody just beat me to him.
Nice draft! You might be interested in my fantasy golf site, http://shlinklincolnsports.com. I'll be posting about our Draft Auction results next week. It was my first fantasy golf Auction and it was a blast.

Will follow Nick Flanagan, Jason Day & Dustin Johnson with interest - any support for Alejandro Canizares?

Good genes, but Canizares is a long shot.

Ahhh, but the tourney is 72 holes. To be fair the weather did not help his cause but the pressure of finishing well probably was the largest factor.
