Where in the World is Shanks Golfing? Las Vegas, Baby!
Originally, my traveling band of golfing brothers had planned our annual golf trip to somewhere in the United Kingdom to play real links golf. But through what seems like 20 twists of fate we have made a 180° turn and re-routed ourselves to Sin City – Las Vegas, Nevada. As some of you know, I recreate with a number of interesting gentlemen who are not averse to the occasional wager, so Vegas is a natural for us. Based on a recommendation, we decided to stay at Planet Hollywood, one of the large resort properties on the Strip.
Having finally settled on the destination, one of the first things I did was to investigate average daily temperatures for that area. We’re going at the end of this month when the high temps are typically in the middle 70s. Not terribly concerned how cool it’ll be at night – we’ll be indoors, I can assure you. Besides the normally temperate climate in late March, there is one other bonus for the time period. Sweet Sixteen weekend! Ahhh, the guys will be in heaven: golf during the day and NCAA tournament wagers at night. After that (and in between) there is the casino. And ole Shanks sure does enjoy the table games.
I’ve been to Las Vegas before but never to play golf. This area has really grown over the last 10 years or so into quite the golf destination. We’ll be playing at Revere G.C., Badlands GC and TPC Las Vegas. As usual, I’ll post my impressions of the whole kit and caboodle when I return. I am aware there are tons of other things to do besides golf and gambling. But for the life of me, I can’t imagine myself or any of my crew doing them.

Recently played at Revere and Badlands. Also played at Rio Secco.
I am not a Johnny Miller fan, but I enjoyed Badlands. It was my favorite of the 3 tracks. I can't remember which rota I played, but it was enjoyable. A little risk/reward, but if you hit decent shots, you should score well.
Revere wasn't bad. Had a good biscuits and gravy breakfast, and a decent lunch. It is an older set, and the golf course is short. But overall, it was enjoyable. Pretty easy course.
Rio was overpriced and a bit overhyped. Some good holes, but they paint the fairways during the winter, which left an odd green skidmark on my ball. The lunch was good, and the clubhouse is nice, but a bit odd. Great waitstaff behind the bar. Never did get to TPC.
Enjoy the trip. Don't stay out too late.
