Believe It or Not, Pro Golfers Like Paul Goydos Can Be Funny
For as long as I can remember, Touring Golf Professionals have been accused of a lack of personality, of being bland. But what I know is their demeanor on the course is often different from their normal personality. This week the world got a good dose of Paul Goydos‘ dry sense of humor. For instance, asked why he buttons the top button of his shirt while playing on such a hot and humid day, he responded that he had no shoulders and if he didn’t button all the way up, the shirt might fall off. To borrow from Larry the Cable Guy, I don’t care who ya are - that’s funny right there!
Then there was this from the presumably dour Jim Furyk about Tiger Woods‘ absence from The Players Championship, noting that since Woods’ victory in 2001 he hasn’t finished in the top 10, “If he were here, I’d tease him and say he wasn’t that much of a factor in the past. So what’s the difference?” You have to love it anytime someone needles Tiger Woods.
And finally, a couple of LPGA tour members recently complained to the commissioner about crowded conditions on the putting green because they were having a putting contest when someone’s caddie was standing in their line. They asked him to move, he did, but that wasn’t enough. So the commish enacted a new policy that fines caddies $500 for being on the practice putting & chipping greens. Asked her opinion of this new rule, Juli Inkster, one of the great personalities in golf, had this to say, “You know what? It’s women. If you just put that down, everyone will know what you mean. Just capitalize ‘women’ and you don’t need to explain anything else.”
Now, that is funny! We can only hope that Inkster will get into TV commentary when her competitive playing days are over.
