Would Captain Azinger Pick a Senior for the Ryder Cup?

Win a free golf book!

Maybe.

If there is one thing U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger has repeated time and time again, it’s that he wants desperately to select hot golfers with his unprecedented four Captain’s picks. He has even suggested aloud that he would consider other Tours. Virtually all of us assumed that he was referring to the Nationwide Tour and some of those young upcoming stars IF they were dominating. But what of the older set? Certainly we witnessed in the Open Championship at Birkdale that a hot senior golfer in his 50s can still give the flatbellies a go.

So I’m telling you now that after last week’s domination of the field at the Jeld-Wen Tradition, Fred Funk is in the unlikely position of potentially making a run at being in the U.S. side. Make that very unlikely. But if he were to win again this week or next on the Champions Tour, he’s certainly worth a look. Everybody knows his game is well-suited to match play when he is on form. Not only does he hit more fairways than anyone since Calvin Peete, he seldom misses greens as well. What an asset in match play to be always in the fairway and then, by virtue of being shorter off the tee than your opponent, on the green first.

There was a terrific post tournament quote from Funk on his three-shot victory: “If you’re in a fight, I want to kick them again. I learned that when I used to be a boxer. You don’t want this guy coming back. So when he’s down, kick him again.” Sounds like an attitude in which recent U.S. teams – Tiger Woods excluded - have been woefully short.

I was trying to decide whether I would rather win The Masters or the Jeld-Wen Tradition. After all, they're both majors. I don't think Funk can cut it on the PGA Tour anymore even if he does. In any case I would bet a whole lot of money Funk won't be on the Ryder Cup team no matter how many senior events he wins. The "Champions" tour is a bad joke and their majors are an insult to the real majors. One of the many things I admire about Jack Nicklaus is he knew when it was time to hang it up.

Funk has senior tour nerves and Valhalla will be too long for Fred. End of discussion.

I would disagree with OS about the Sr Tour being a joke. I also disagree with RonMonster about Funk's nerves. Ther are as they've always been. He won the Players Championship just 3 years ago, for God's sake. He also won in Mexico last year against a field of tour pros excluding top 65 involved in the Match Play. Why do I mention that WIN? Two reasons: he's got enough length to compete with the young guys and his putting nerve did not fail him under pressure. Oh, by the way, he was nursing a bad back that week too.

The reason the Sr Tour is a joke is that there are maybe 10 guys out there who can still play and the rest are over the hill, way over. So you only have to beat a few guys to win a tournament. Depth is the problem. Mr. Funk said he would win 2 million on the PGA Tour this year and another 2 million on the Sr Tour. He has won 257k on the PGA Tour and since March has missed 6 of 8 cuts and earned 38k. So if we want hot players it ain't Funk and also the 3 years since he won The Players is like a century when you are half a century old. I'm going out on a limb - there is 0 chance Funk will be a Ryder Cup selection. Sorry Shanks.

Funk has been battling injury which led to poor form. All I'm saying is that IF he has it straightened out and dominates on the Sr. Tour, he will be under consideration. If you are keen on golf history, there are many instances of an in-form 50+ year old golfer nearly beating ALL of the world's best in stroke play tournaments. Norman at Birkdale is only the latest.

The question to azinger is: do you want someone who has competed well over the year or somebody who is playing very well right now?

Does a man want Mrs. Right or Mrs. Right Now ? Right now is my answer but does dominating on the Sr. tour really indicate playing very well right now ? I don't think so. In other words would Funk, playing on a long hard golf course, do well right now ? I don't know but I doubt it. If he was playing on the PGA Tour this week and next and finished in the top say 15 each week I would agree he might be a good pick but alas he isn't so we will never know which is why Azinger would be a laughing stock if he picked him. The bottom line to me is we need to go with youth even if we lose again, the old guys have had their chances. Picking experience has led to a string of losses so let's try something different.

Perhaps a moot issue regardless, as Funk had the post-win blues for 2 rounds in Washington. Not exactly dominating. But a final round 66 plus a dominant performance at Pebble still might get him consideration.

And the reason I would even slightly consider him is not for his experience but for veryhot play.

I wish Azinger would give Steve Stricker the nod and put him out of his misery (before the Deutsche Bank). I know he had a bad third round, but he did pull himself together for Sunday which must have been very tough. He did T19 with Mickelson and was easily the "best of the rest" of the next would-be qualifiers. It's not a sentimental vote either. I think he would give it his all and is playing well enough to merit a pick.

No chance for Funk, IMO, and I think Azinger's talk of not disregarding Seniors/Nationwide Tours is some kind of gee-up to the real contenders. Even with the comparative luxury of 4 picks, it sounds suicidal to me. If some of the experienced players say they can barely stop shaking on the first tee, I can't imagine what a Nationwide Tour pick would be feeling...actually I can but would rather not.

Stricker will probably be one of the picks as his recent play has improved greatly over that mid-season swoon.

It would take another dominant performance this week for Azinger to even consider picking Funk.

If Azinger wants very hot play right now he should pick Scott Piercy. Who ? He has won 2 of the last 3 Nationwide events and was 6th in the other one. He also won the Ultimate Game winner take all event last year for 2 million. I actually kind of like the idea.

I wouldn't have a problem with that pick at all. Seems to be the very definition of "hot golfer". Certainly, he's played well under the gun. And anyone who can win 2 Nationwide events in one year is undeniably Tour caliber.
