Sad Stories on the PGA and Nationwide Tours

The permutations of what could be the final result of tomorrow play can boggle the mind. But one thing is fairly certain now. At least 5 players who were within the qualifying list coming into this final week have played their way out of exempt status. This is the sad stuff that you wouldn’t wish on anybody.

On the PGA Tour, these three missed the cut and are defenseless against the guys who are playing well and trying to pass them: No. 124 Shane Bertsch, No.120 Brad Adamonis and probably No. 119 Jason Bohn. No. 122 Nick Watney and miracle man No. 125 Jeff Overton made the cut, but are skating on thin ice and in need of one more solid round to stay in. And there are more than a handful of guys who by either winning (Gamez, Gainey) or a very high finish (Sterling, Garrigus, Gore) can really upset the apple cart.

Over on the Nationwide Tour, No. 25 Chris Tidland is done. It appears that No. 22 Ricky Barnes also likely to just miss out. Making a huge move is No. 32 Bryce Molder who is tied for the lead after threee rounds and 3 shots clear of the rest of the field. With a top five finish he’ll leapfrog past Barnes and Tidland. No. 26 Hunter Haas is a mortal lock to pass Tidland, so it will be a battle with Barnes for that last spot. Unless. Unless somebody even further down the money list were to win finish second alone. There are two who fit that description: No. 51 Kyle Reifers or second round leader No. 47 Garrett Osborn. David Branshaw and D.J. Brigman have a slugger’s chance with a special final round.

I hope you get a chance to watch this story unfold.

Well, thank goodness the wotsit's past the yardarm and I can have a glass of wine to steady the nerves.

Have been following 3 qualifiers from Nationwide (Nick Flanagan, Jason Day & Martin Laird) and 3 from Q-school (Brad Adamonis, Dustin Johnson & Alejandro Canizares) this year so final tournament of great interest to me. Cannot believe Jason Day can shoot -15 and be in the top 10 - last time I looked - and still lose out. With current dearth of Scotsmen, do hope Martin Laird makes it. Brad Adamonis might just cling on. Also watching some of those on the bubble play incredibly well but probably still lose out - Joe Durant, Kevin Stadler, etc. Cruel world. Jeff Overton, Erik Compton, Dudley Hart still standing though.

Must get back to the action.

All very interesting but keep in mind that this year only 5 out of 25 Nationwide grads from 2007 kept their cards and only 10 finished in the top 150. From Q-School 7 kept their cards and 10 finished in the top 150. Things get tough on the big tour.

Both ends of the spectrum. Jason Gore & Hunter Haas succumbed to the pressure mid-round, and Martin Laird & Bryce Molder did just enough. Laird made that huge 8 footer on the 72nd to eke out his Tour card. Molder nearly choked away his card with an awful back nine but had such a big cushion that a two-over par back nine did not matter.

Talk about a turn around. Couldn't have guessed that Watney was going to come back so strong this year

Agreed, Watney's play this year is the biggest surprise in pro golf.
