Insignificant European Ryder Cup Change
Friday May 15, 2009 | 16:02:15 94 words, 21705 views
So now, European Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie gets three picks instead of two. And it means precisely what? To get that “extra” pick, one less world class champion will automatically qualify from the World Rankings list. Insignificant, it is. In 2008, the number 5 European player in the world rankings was Robert Karlsson, who was a stud in Kentucky last Fall. Had he not qualified from that list, he would have been in on the European Order of Merit, effectively kicking Soren Hansen out of automatically qualifying. Six of one, half dozen of the other. At first, I disagreed. Since Europe pick from two lists, THAT element of the system must be changed. Should they reward those who stay at home and play their tour, or should they go to one list with weighted results from across the globe? THAT would be a significant upgrade. One more pick would have meant one more Englishman for Nick Faldo last year.

Kind of surprising that each side doesn't mirror the other in the number of Captain's picks. Pavin has 4, so Monty ought to have 4.
"Just because we lose one, there's no need to panic" (i.e. go to 4 picks).
Anyway, Rory says it's only an exhibition match. So 'tis, Rory, so 'tis.

Now Rory will get the Hunter Mahan treatment - grilled in every paper. Somebody should tell these young guys to reserve all comments until they've actually played in a Ryder Cup.
Actually, Shanks, he stood his ground pretty well in the TV interview I saw explaining his comments. Spoke in a very calm & non-defensive way, saying he would love to play in it, but reiterated that it IS an exhibition match and he would prefer to win a major.(TW anyone?)
I so wanted to believe his original comments were meant to tweak Monty, his playing partner for the next day, but no-one could have kept that straight a face!

Regardless of intent, some of the press will run with it. Even Woods got grilled for that very sentiment. And Mahan was correct, some of the non-golf activities are unnecessary. The players get worn out enough just from playing.

That element of the system must be changed
