Fanatasy Golf League Update: Shanks in front, going to the whip

Win a free golf book!

We’re officially coming down the back stretch now and I’ve got one hand on the first place prize with a lead of over $896K in earnings. Just one problem, though. The team in second place has the potential to fly past me this week at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China. Here’s the breakdown:

Team Darth Vader (the second place guys) is comprised of Tiger Woods (1/2), Phil Mickelson (1/3), Lee Westwood and Paul Casey. Ouch! All four of them have played extremely well at this venue before. It could have been worse as they also have Angel Cabrera, but he pulled out of the tournament earlier in the week. Thank God. Coming from this week’s $7 million purse, first prize will be about $1.2 million, second about $750K and third about $450K. With my lead, fractions of Woods and Mickelson’s earnings aren’t the primary concern. No, that would be the in-form Lee Westwood. While Paul Casey is still shaking off the rust of a three-month layoff due to injury, Westwood has been playing world class golf, winning just a few weeks ago in Spain. I can only hope he has jet lag lasting throughout the weekend. The good news is that none of them are playing next week at the final PGA Tour event in Disney World.

Team Luke Skywalker (your boy Shanks) is made up of Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar and Pat Perez. Stenson always seems to run hot and cold but normally plays well in China. Kuchar is now perhaps playing as well as Westwood, having won just a month ago in Pennsylvania. And Perez is also trying to capture his pre-injury form from earlier this year. I don’t know if any of my guys - which include Dustin Johnson and Hunter Mahan - will be playing at Disney.

In addition to all of this, my secret weapon IS playing in Japan this week. Jiyai Shin has justified my draft day faith by winning three times so far in 2009 and leading the money list with three events to go. (If she were American, you’d rarely hear of anyone else.) I just might need her to win one more time if things don’t go my way in China.

who doesn't like some good old fanatasy golf, fanatasy football, or fanatasy anything? I've had my fun...good luck this weekend.

No shocker that Woods is 5 under in the first round but Paul Casey did also. Guess he's over that rusty period, dammit. Still, I'm hanging even with the at whole team as Perez & Kuchar are 4 under and Stenson is 3 under. Will definitely hold my interest for the next few days. The difference in payouts between first and second place is a four figure number.

I don't care; I just don't care .....

I'm currently singing "We Are The Champions ....Of The World", albeit not tunefully.

I think the HSBC purse was reduced from what I can see, which helped a bit and as Westy can't harm us now, shall we wish him in all the luck in Dubai?

My little calculator tells me at least half a horse ahead. What say you, Captain?

Brings to mind the old southern U.S. saying "It's all over but the shouting". The 2nd place team has no one playing in the final PGA Tour event at Disney World and nobody else is close enough to catch us, even with a miracle 1-2-3-4-5-6 finish.

So, now I say, best of luck to Westwood!!

Never mind Westwood - I want some crowing - or are you waiting for the final whistle?

Just found out that the HSBC - though sanctioned by PGA Tour - is unoffical. The win doesn't count for Mickelson nor does the prize money go towards PGA Tour money list. All that worrying this week for nothing.

WE WIN!!!!

Hilarious! Still, it kept it gripping and the calculator keys burning. Any chance we can make it a thorough trouncing by a $1M?

Many congratulations for the win with such imaginative picks.

Yes, the winning margin could very well exceed $1 million. We're currently ahead by $941,000 and still have Jiyai Shin playing in the final 2 LPGA events.

Let's see if Shin can make it $1.2 million for us this final week of LPGA play. Just for effect.

Promise me just one gloat blog?

Do all the other teams have to kneel before you? I'm getting visions of total prostration here. Must be one of the biggest winning margins?

I hope she gets POY for what she has brought to the party. Go Jiyai!

I can guarantee one wrap-up blog. And perhaps there will be a hint of gloat about it!
